How does N26 work?
N26 is a digital bank that’s available in a number of countries across Europe, including Ireland. When you sign up with N26 Bank, you have four account options to choose from: N26 Standard, N26 Smart, N26 You and N26 Metal.
N26 Standard is the most basic account and the only free option. The Smart, You and Metal accounts each have monthly fees attached to them but also more features for you to benefit from. All 4 accounts come with a Mastercard (the Standard account comes with a virtual Mastercard), an app, free ATM withdrawals in euros and free payments in any currency. The app offers spending insights, security options and other useful features to help you understand and manage your money.
You manage your N26 account out of the app, which is accessible from your smartphone, or the N26 web app.

N26 You, N26 Metal, N26 Business You, N26 Business Metal accounts and existing customers that joined before 19 October 2020 will be exempt from this negative interest. Pros

Instant alerts. Stay updated on your account activities with instant alerts.
Card control. If your card is stolen or misplaced, simply freeze its usage within a few taps on the N26 app.
Has a banking license. N26 operates with a full banking license from the European Central Bank (ECB).
Cons
No multicurrency support. You can only hold one currency in your N26 account.
Limited features. Compared to other digital banks, the N26 app is lacking some budgeting and savings features.
No phone support. N26 does not offer phone support. A number of N26 users also complained that its in-app chat support is somewhat slow.
Negative interest payments. New customers that deposit more than €50,000 with be charged 0.5% on the amount that exceeds €50,000. Exemptions apply to N26 You, N26 Metal, N26 Business You, N26 Business Metal accounts and existing customers that joined before 19 October 2020.
N26 vs Revolut
While both N26 and Revolut are two of the most popular digital banks in Europe, N26, for a while, was a lot more similar to a regular bank than Revolut. Simply put, N26 is designed to be a more streamlined and efficient mobile solution than traditional banks. Revolut did burst onto the scene as a new class of financial service providers with its wide range of advanced features. However, it has since been granted a full banking licence from the European Central Bank.
For N26, you can hold Euros in the app and exchange it for any currency without being charged a fee. Depending on which account you choose, there are some limits for the number of free ATM Euro withdrawals you have each month – but N26 also lets you send, receive and request money from friends instantly and transfer money into 19 currencies using Wise.
Revolut, on the other hand, allows you to hold multiple currencies in your account including cryptocurrencies. You can also set up automatic savings with your family and friends through multiple sub-accounts.
N26 is a good option to consider for a few reasons. You can use it to spend in and transfer multiple currencies fee-free, get on top of your spending with the budgeting tools and benefit from extra perks such as insurance. If you’re not looking to pay for a bank account, N26’s free N26 Standard account still has a lot of the features that make it worth signing up for including budgeting tools and foreign currency spending and transfers. You just won’t get extra perks such as insurance and you’ll be charged €10 to get the physical Mastercard and a small fee for ATM withdrawals in other currencies.
If you want a more feature-packed account, the 3 other paid accounts are likely to be worth it if you’ll use the features. If you plan to make large deposits as a new customer, just be aware that you’ll be charged interest on the balance over €50,000 unless you opt for the N26 You or Metal accounts or the equivalent business accounts.

“Had a question about my account and the phone service was very polite and professional and solve the problem within minutes.” — Luc Van Raepenbusch
“Can’t log in to the app. It’s alternatively “Unexpected error” or “Something went wrong”. On both WiFi and cellular data. The app security becomes a terrible headache whenever I travel, which I do a lot.” — KK
