What does Boxing Day mean?

When all is said and done, Boxing Day means an extra day off to spend with your family and friends, visit another side of the family you didn’t get time to see on Christmas Day and put your appetite to the test by plowing through those leftovers.

But these days Shoppers also celebrate Boxing Day bargain hunting, as major stores drop their prices to clear stock before the new year. We like to think of it as the day you give a gift to yourself!

What are Boxing Day sales?

Boxing Day is a shopping holiday where many retailers reserve some of their best sales for the year. It has become the most popular day for shopping in commonwealth countries. Discounts can range from anywhere between 25% to 80% off during a Boxing Day sale which is really the main reason why shoppers find it worth waiting for.

Bricks and mortar retailers are well known for having some of the best Boxing Day discounts. As part of a strategy to encourage people to go to their store they often have loss leading deals with products they will lose money on.

How did Boxing Day get its name?

Competing speculations about where Boxing Day got its name are many. The prevailing theory is that Boxing Day quite literally refers to “Christmas boxes”, another word for presents. The idea is that domestic workers and servants who worked on Christmas Day had the next day off to celebrate, and would give and receive boxed gifts for the occasion.

Are shops open on Boxing Day?

As a rule stores, shopping centres and retailers keep their doors open and their prices down on Boxing Day and wait for the crowds to come. There might be a few exceptions, as these days “Boxing Day sales” can start closer to New Year’s Eve, so it’s always best to double check if you are after something specific. If your favourite store is not open on Boxing Day, or if you can’t stomach the crowds, take a look online instead.

When do Boxing Day sales end?

It really varies from store to store. Some shops will keep on reducing the price of their old stock until it’s all gone, while others will keep the sales to a strict deadline. In most cases, the best sales are available from 26 December until the first week of January.

Does Apple do Boxing Day sales?

Yes, Apple does Boxing Day sales each year. It’s always tricky to know beforehand what will be on sale and where you can pick up the best deal but we would suggest making a list of your top three must-haves and subscribing to a sale alert so you can find the discounts as soon as possible.

Tips on getting the best bargains this Boxing Day

Getting the most out of Boxing Day sales is no easy task, so here are a few quick tips to help you get the most out of the sales.

  • Set a budget. It’s easy to overspend at a sale. When you see sale signs advertising huge discounts you tend to buy more than you need because you think you are saving money. What you don’t realise is the savings often don’t equate to the amount you’re spending. Set a budget for the day and stick to it so you don’t wake up the next day with an all-too-familiar ‘sales hangover’.
  • Do your research. Another common mistake at Boxing Day sales is people going shopping with little preparation. Boxing Day sales only come once a year and shouldn’t be treated like a normal shopping day. Have a look and see what stores are having sales and what products they will be discounting. Many stores advertise huge Boxing Day savings but only have specific products included. Stores should list the information for its sales online, so be sure to have a look in the lead-up to Christmas.
  • Know when the sales start and finish. Both online and physical stores will have different sales with different start and end times. Have a look online at what time the shops open to make sure you get there in plenty of time. Online stores generally start their sales at around the same time or even earlier, so check times to make sure you get the best deals first. Most people aren’t aware that some online stores even start their sales before Christmas, so check sales times so you don’t miss out.
  • Focus on the right products. Whether you are shopping online or battling the Boxing Day crowds, sales can be overwhelming. Don’t let yourself be inundated by products when the sale starts— know what you want to buy and go straight for those products. Focus on the products that were missed out on at Christmas, so if you got a lot of clothes and perfume then maybe you should look for beauty products or electronics.
