How to set up and watch Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

Apple’s streaming box gained the Amazon Prime Video service in late 2016, while Amazon lost access to YouTube on its own Fire TV platform in early 2018.

Amazon announced in December 2016 that its Amazon Prime Video streaming service was now available to owners of the Apple TV. The Amazon Prime Video app requires a subscription to the service to operate and works with Apple’s built-in universal search. Before you plan to stream Amazon Prime Video on an Apple TV, you will need at least a 3rd generation Apple TV or later. Anything older than the 3rd generation will not support the streaming service.

Apple and Amazon had been clashing on the issue of Amazon Prime TV support for many years, with Amazon going so far as to pull the Apple TV from its US storefront in 2016, citing potential customer confusion as to the reason why. Now, in 2018, the launch of Amazon Prime Video on the Apple TV has proved to be convenient, where subscribers can watch original programming such as The Grand Tour.

However, Amazon still has streaming battles to fight, with Google announcing in 2017 that it would pull YouTube support from Amazon’s Fire TV platform entirely from 1 January 2018. Google isn’t happy that Amazon isn’t listing Nest (a Google/Alphabet owned company) devices on its US storefront, and had earlier dropped access for Amazon’s Echo Show platform before announcing that it would remove access for Fire TV owners as well.
