How much does it cost to sell on Bonanza?

Bonanza’s fee structure is somewhat complicated. The good news is that it’s free to sign up for an account and list your items.

Bonanza fees are based on the final offer value (FOV) of a your sales. The FOV is a combination of two things:

  1. The amount a buyer pays for your product.
  2. Any shipping fees higher than $10.

So, let’s say you sold a T-shirt for $25, with $12 for shipping. The FOV of that sale would be $27. That’s $25 for the T-shirt and $2 for the shipping over $10.

Based on the FOV of a sale, Bonanza charges a Final Value Fee (FVF):

  • If the FOV is under $500, the fee is 3.5%.
  • If the FOV is over $500, the fee is 3.5% plus a flat 1.5% of the amount over $500.

A minimum $0.50 fee is applies to every sale.

Let’s crunch the numbers

John sells a vintage book for $30 with a $20 shipping fee. His final order value (FOV) is $40, so Bonanza’s fees are as follows for the standard booth:

  • It costs 3.5% of $40. John pays $1.40, keeping $28.60 of his sale.

If John has signed up for the Basic advertising program:

  • It costs 9% of $40 for advertising. John pays $3.60, keeping $26.40 of his sale.

Is selling on Bonanza worth it?

This depends. The costs of selling online can add up, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll make money. However, a few simple steps can maximize your chances of running a profitable online business:

  • Research the market. Find out which products are popular on Bonanza and how they’re priced. This will help you determine whether there’s a niche in the market you might be able to fill.
  • Create a high-quality booth and listings. Your Bonanza profile should include plenty of useful information about you and your business. Make sure that your booth is user friendly.
  • Create professional listings. Use high-quality photos and optimize the titles and descriptions of your listings for SEO.
  • Market your products. If you sign up for a standard account and don’t promote your items, it can be hard to get your booth noticed. Sign up for an external advertising program, use Bonanza’s Customer Marketing Tool or market your products through social media.

How to price your items

Consider two major factors when determining how to price items on Bonanza:

  • Your costs. Calculate how much it costs you to source, manufacture and ship items to customers. Remember to factor Bonanza’s transaction, advertising and membership fees into your calculations, and additional overhead. This allows you to pinpoint your target profit margin.
  • Customer budgets. Research what other sellers charge for similar products — this should give you an idea of how much buyers are willing to pay.

What types of payment does Bonanza accept?

Sellers can only accept PayPal. If you’re a Gold member or higher you can add Stripe payments.

How to ship

Bonanza doesn’t have its own fulfillment center, so you have two options when shipping items to customers:

  • Ship items yourself. Bonanza suggests selecting a shipping service when you set up your booth so buyers have an accurate estimate of shipping rates and speeds. Compare quotes across major carriers, like USPS, FedEx and DHL. Set your default shipping preferences in the Booth Settings menu of your selling dashboard.
  • Use a third-party fulfillment service. Third-party fulfillment services can store products, prepare orders and then ship them for you — for a fee.

If you’re not sure where to start, explore Bonanza’s list of preferred shipping partners.

How do I market my Bonanza products?

There are several ways to promote your listings through Bonanza, including:

  • Bonanza Advertising. There are four programs available that allow you to advertise on different online channels, but each comes at an extra cost.
  • Bonanza Promotions. Offered as part of Bonanza’s advertising programs, you don’t pay Bonanza’s commission fee. The fee is discounted from the price for the buyer’s benefit. So you make the same profit, but sell for a bit less.
  • TurboTraffic. Available as an add-on or part of the Platinum and Titan plans, this service works with your advertising program and could drive up to 300% more traffic to your booth.
  • Customer Marketing Tool. This free tool allows you to sort and manage the data of previous customers, and use that data to create customized marketing campaigns.
  • Customer Marketing Coupons. Select from premade coupon templates or create your own to encourage repeat business. Or use the system to create your own customer loyalty program.
  • Bonanza Webstores. Create your own webstore outside the Bonanza marketplace. There’s no listing or transaction fees for your store, but hosting is $255 annually.

What to watch out for with Bonanza

Be wary of the following drawbacks when selling on Bonanza:

  • Fee structure. Bonanza’s fee structure is complex, so take some time to read the fine print before you sign up.
  • Limited reach. Bonanza’s marketplace lacks the size and reach of competitor marketplaces eBay and Amazon.
  • Limited payment options. It only offers PayPal for most plans. Add Stripe with higher tiers.

Bottom line

With no listing fees and plenty of product categories, there’s room to make money on Bonanza — if you’re willing to market your booth. Read up on Bonanza’s fee structure and try out the standard booth before you opt into its paid programs. And if you’re planning to sell on multiple sites, compare e-commerce platforms to find one that’s the right fit.
