Most major US-based hotel chains are softening change and cancellation policies in the wake of a coronavirus outbreak that has left many people rethinking their travel plans. In fact, most of the major players — including Hilton, Marriott and InterContinental Hotel Group — are waiving fees at all hotels globally.

What to do if you booked through a third-party site

Most major hotels advise contacting the third-party provider directly, if that’s how you booked your trip. Some booking sites offer help with cancellations depending on how far out you booked. But most are asking customers to refrain from calling unless your trip is within 72 hours.

What if I booked an Airbnb or other homeshare?

After originally refusing to give refunds, Airbnb extended its extenuating circumstances policy to provide penalty-free cancellations for hosts and full refunds for guests. Other sites like HomeAway and Vrbo are waiving cancellation penalties for property owners, but guests will need to contact the property owner to inquire about getting a refund.

Extra safety measures

Most of the hotels in this list say they’re following recommended procedures and protocols from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including heightened cleaning efforts to keep hotel surfaces in rooms and common areas sanitary. For example, Hyatt says it’s implemented hand-sanitizer stations globally, while Red Roof said in a statement “high-touch areas are being cleaned and sanitized several times a day.”

Some hotels, like Rosewood, are performing temperature guests on all guests and staff and closing areas like steam rooms and saunas.

Bottom line

If you have an upcoming trip before the end of April, you should be in good shape to cancel or reschedule without penalty. Before you unpack that suitcase, make sure you can reschedule your airfare as well.
