Hoopla review

Last updated:

Find out what all the hoopla is about with this free, unlimited audiobook service.

Hoopla is a digital media service that sources your local library to provide unlimited audiobooks to its members — plus so much more. Most users will love its unlimited media content, but the app has been known to gives users difficulty.

What is Hoopla?

Hoopla is a virtual extension of local library system that allows you to rent audiobooks. However, it’s extended itself beyond audiobooks to include comics, movies, music and TV as rental options, too.

Plus, Hoopla has managed to bypass some of its competitors’ restrictions: It offers offline file downloads or online streaming options. There’s great device compatibility that’s recently stepped up to include Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV and ChromeCast.

One key feature that lacks some certainty: The service doesn’t classify how much of its 400,000+ catalogue falls into the audiobook category — so the exact library size may be on the slimmer side.

Pros and cons

Look for the plus and minus sides of all services. Here are a few of Hoopla’s:

  • Extends beyond audiobooks to multiple other media
  • Great device compatibility
  • No costs involved
  • Audiobook catalog size is smaller
  • Troublesome app experience
  • Must have a compatible library card

How much does Hoopla cost?

Instantly borrow audiobooks plus digital movies, music, eBooks and more, 24/7 with your library card — for absolutely free.

Does Hoopla have a free trial?

Hoopla is a free service courtesy of your local libraries – so free trials aren’t needed.

Expert review

Hoopla is a free digital media service that delivers unlimited audiobooks and other media straight to your device — for free, thanks to your local library system. But many users complain about the glitchy app, and a shorter reading list from many other online book providers. And some may feel restricted using a modern platform supporting an outdated lending process.

Either way, take a close look at all audiobook services available to you and investigate which one best meets your needs.
