History of Mutant Ape Yacht Club Collection

The Mutant Ape Yacht Club is a collection of 20,000 Mutant Apes NFTs dropped by the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) on 28 August 2021. The Bored Ape Yacht Club is a collection of 10,000 unique Bored Apes NFTs launched on 30 April 2021. Both collections live on the Ethereum blockchain.

Mutant Apes can be created either by introducing a Bored Ape to a Mutant Serum or by minting a Mutant Ape. Holders of Bored Apes were airdropped 1 of 3 Mutant Serums, M1, M2 and M3, that would enable the creation of Mutant Apes. Mutant Apes created with M1 and M2 serums keep the original traits of the Ape while the ones created by M3 serum acquire rare qualities. Serum vials are currently provided to buyers by the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

Evaluating Mutant Ape Yacht Club Collection

According to Bored Ape Yacht Club, Mutant Apes were created to cater to new members who found it hard to join the Bored Ape Yacht Club community due to the current high prices of Bored Apes. The Mutants also represent the final tier of membership to the BAYC ecosystem.

Mutant Apes, like Bored Apes, have distinguishing features also known as traits. These include background, fur, clothes, eyes, mouth, hat, name and earrings. M1 and M2 serums change the traits of a Bored Monkey they are introduced to.Based on how the serums were distributed and on their selling price, it is believed that M1 creates traits that are less valuable than M2.

Key Considerations

Before adding Mutant Ape Yacht Club to your NFT collection, here are a few things worth considering.

Serum type

Mutant Apes can only be created by 3 serum types:

  • M1 serum
  • M2 serum
  • M3 serum

The serums can only be used once. However, you can use 2 different serums on the same ape. For example, you can use M1 and M2 on the same Ape, generating 2 new mutants, one with all M1 traits and another with all M2 traits. M3 offers the best attribute upgrades followed by M2 then M1.

Attributes

Mutant Apes have different attributes that distinguish them from each other:

  • Background
  • Fur
  • Clothes
  • Eyes
  • Mouth
  • Hat
  • Earrings
  • Name

Mutant Apes can be differentiated by their serum and attributes. Open Sea allows you to check whether a Mutant Ape was mutated by an M1, M2 or M3 serum. M1 is the most common serum used on a Mutant Ape followed by M2 and then M3. The rarer the serum used on a Mutant Ape, the more expensive it may be to buy.
