With money transfer services beating out banks when it comes to international transfers, more are coming on the market. Ria allows transfers to 146 countries and HiFX to more than 170, allowing you to get your money to loved ones with minimal hassle. We’ll put these two transfer giants head-to-head so you can find which is best for your needs.

HiFX vs. Ria: How they work

HiFX and Ria have almost identical processes for transfers. Sign up for an account, fill out your recipient’s information and add your details. Enter the transfer amount, confirm the exchange rate is acceptable — then submit. It’s quick and simple either way.

Who offers lower fees?

HiFX

You’ll pay $0 in transfer fees when you use HiFX. However, third-party banks may charge fees when you transfer funds to HiFX or when they get to your recipient.

Ria

How much money you’re sending, where you’re sending it, how fast you need it delivered and how it’s being received all impact the fee to make a transfer with Ria. The rates start relatively low at just $3.

  • Winner: HiFX

It’s hard to win out against free. With a muddled fee structure, Ria misses the mark against HiFX.

HiFX

The amount you’re transferring, currency and the exchange rates at the time of your transfer will affect the rates you receive. In general, HiFX offers good rates compared to traditional banks.

  • If the mid-market rate is 1 USD = 0.80 EUR
  • HiFX’s exchange rate might be 1 USD = 0.79 EUR

Ria

Here’s the same example of USD to EUR:

  • If the mid-market rate is 1 USD = 0.80 EUR
  • Ria’s exchange rate might be 1 USD = 0.79 EUR

Let’s imagine you’re sending money to a family member living in Mexico. Here’s what a bank-to-bank transfer might look like using HiFX and Ria.

Bottom line

Its lack of fees makes HiFX a strong candidate. Ria’s transfer speeds are nothing to cough at though, and the low minimum may be important. But these two are far from your only options. Compare what’s out there to find the service that will meet all of your needs before you decide.
