If you’re looking for a cheap provider and quick coverage, get a quote from Geico. It offers low rates and a variety of discounts for just about any driver. Plus, its website and streamlined app allow you to handle anything from signing up to filing a claim online.

But if personalized help with an assigned agent and the ability to have a face-to-face conversation is what you’re after, you’ll want to look elsewhere. Geico gets poor reviews for customer service, and claims are easier to file online without the help of an agent.

Geico car insurance reviews and complaints

While Geico isn’t officially accredited on the Better Business Bureau website, it does hold an A+ rating as of October 2020. Despite its favorable rating, there are well over 3,000 customer complaints. Customers express frustration with billing issues, denied claims, and unsolicited advertising.

However, this insurer ranks above average for overall satisfaction, price, and policy offerings with J.D. Power — one of the most reputable rating agencies around.

Other comparison websites like NerdWallet, ValuePenguin and The Simple Dollar note its complaints are about average for such a big company, and its low rates and digital experience make it a top contender.

I switched to Geico car insurance when we moved out of state and our local insurer was no longer available near us.

My husband and I had a joint policy with Erie for $1,244 a year for 100/300/100 coverage with collision and comprehensive on a 2016 Ford C-Max and a 2011 Toyota Prius.

Geico gave us a quote of $691 a year for the same coverage but without collision and comprehensive on the Prius. That rate dropped to $547 when we added Geico renters insurance underwritten by Assurant, and I’m able to manage everything together online.

Getting an online quote is long and difficult, but Geico lets you save your quote and come back later. You can tweak your quote and compare policies side by side, which makes it easy to see how much extra coverage you can buy. The quote tool starts at the state minimum requirements so you won’t be underinsured. The online policy management is also easier than other companies’ websites I’ve used.

My present NJ car insurance policy expires on Mar 13, 2018 at 12:01 am. I purchased a new policy from a differnt insurer and accidently put in Mar 16, 2018 at 12:01 am as the starting date. I called the insuance company about this and they said they cannot change the start date. Will I be OK in NJ if i do not drive my car for the three days without insurance? Thanks!

Hi there — thank you for reaching out to the finder team!

The short answer is you should never be without car insurance if you own a registered and licensed car — that’s the law in New Jersey. However, since you’re not driving it during the lapse and since this is such a short period of time, you probably don’t have to worry about a collision or accident. But you won’t be protected if someone hits your parked car or if your garage floods.

It’s worth asking both your new provider and your old provider if either would be willing to prorate — which means to charge you at a similar daily rate to what you were paying before — for an extra few days of coverage to protect you during this small lapse. After all, you’re a paying customer, and someone may be able to work with you.

You can also look into short-term car insurance coverage. This way you’re covered if you do need to drive the car during that span — say, during an emergency. A few established providers offer this kind of coverage, including Geico, Progressive, and Allstate. I highly recommend you learn more about temporary car insurance.

We hope this information was helpful and that you have everything you need. If not, we encourage you to contact us again or talk to your provider to clear up any remaining questions.

        Cheers!
        Andy
