Expert review

If you’re looking for a cheap policy and an intuitive online experience, get a quote from Geico. It offers some of the cheapest rates around, and its steep discounts for insuring multiple cars or having a clean record help you save even more.

Some of its best features include its website and streamlined app. These online services let you handle signing up, getting your ID cards, filing a claim and uploading any photos of accident damage.

But if you’re after personalized help with an agent or having a face-to-face conversation, you can find higher-rated customer service. Geico has average customer service and sees mixed online reviews about its billing and claims process.

Overall, Geico works best if you’re comparing the cheapest rates and enjoy managing your policy and claims process online.

What car insurance coverage can I get from Geico?

Geico offers a wide lineup of auto insurance options. That means you can get basic coverage or add extras like rideshare coverage that not every company provides.

  • Bodily injury liability. Provides protection if you injure someone while operating your car.
  • Collision. Pays for damage to your car when you collide with another car or object.
  • Comprehensive. Pays for car repairs and replacement from incidents other than a collision, such as fire, theft or falling objects.
  • Emergency roadside service. Helps when your car breaks down and needs roadside repairs, like dead batteries, labor to change flat tires, lockouts up to $100 and towing.
  • Mechanical breakdown. Covers repairs to your car’s mechanical parts after your warranty expires, except issues caused by improper maintenance or wear and tear.
  • Medical payments. Pays for the medical expenses of the injured driver and passengers in your car.
  • Nonowner coverage. You can get coverage for a vehicle you drive but don’t own.
  • Property damage liability. Protects you if your car damages someone else’s property.
  • Rental reimbursement. Covers the cost of a rental car while yours is being repaired.

  • Uninsured motorists. Pays for your injuries caused by an uninsured driver.

What extra perks does Geico offer?

Geico offers special programs that add value to your policy by boosting coverage, support or saving you money. For example, accident forgiveness helps to save you from rate hikes.

  • 24-hour service. Contact a Geico representative 24/7 by phone, online or through the app.
  • Accident forgiveness. Buy this perk or earn it after five years and your premiums won’t go up after your first at-fault accident, except in California, Connecticut or Massachusetts.
  • Car buying service. Save money with Geico’s certified dealer network and online tool to help you compare prices and specs.
  • Geico mobile app. Get quick access to your digital insurance ID cards, emergency roadside assistance and virtual assistants. Plus, easily submit photos of your vehicle’s damage during a claim — all from an app that sees nearly 5-star ratings from hundreds of thousands of app store reviews.
  • Guaranteed repairs. Get a lifetime guarantee on repairs through Geico’s Auto Repair Xpress network of auto body shops.

Geico car insurance reviews and complaints

While Geico isn’t accredited with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), it holds an A+ rating as of April 2021. However, it has over 2,800 customer complaints filed with the BBB. Customers complain about problems with billing like unexpected charges, as well as denied claims and unsolicited advertising.

Also, Geico scores 871 out of 1,000 points in the 2020 claims satisfaction study by J.D. Power, which is right at the national average. These reviews and ratings suggest an average claims experience.

On the positive side, Geico ranks in the top five insurers for customer satisfaction, based on J.D. Power’s auto insurance satisfaction study. J.D. Power is of the most reputable rating agencies around. Plus, Geico holds a 0.79 complaint score from the 2020 National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) complaint index for private passenger vehicles. The national score is 1.00, which shows that Geico is dealing with customer issues properly.

Other comparison websites like NerdWallet, ValuePenguin and The Simple Dollar note that Geico’s complaints are about average for its size, and its low rates and digital experience make it a top contender.

Case study: Roslyn's experience

I switched to Geico car insurance when we moved out of state and our local insurer was no longer available near us.

My husband and I had a joint policy with Erie for $1,244 a year for 100/300/100 coverage with collision and comprehensive on a 2016 Ford C-Max and a 2011 Toyota Prius.

Geico gave us a quote of $691 a year for the same coverage but without collision and comprehensive on the Prius. That rate dropped to $547 when we added Geico renters insurance underwritten by Assurant, and I’m able to manage everything together online.

Getting an online quote is long and difficult, but Geico lets you save your quote and come back later. You can tweak your quote and compare policies side by side, which makes it easy to see how much extra coverage you can buy. The online policy management is also easier than other companies’ websites I’ve used.
