    My present NJ car insurance policy expires on Mar 13, 2018 at 12:01 am. I purchased a new policy from a differnt insurer and accidently put in Mar 16, 2018 at 12:01 am as the starting date. I called the insuance company about this and they said they cannot change the start date. Will I be OK in NJ if i do not drive my car for the three days without insurance? Thanks!

      The short answer is you should never be without car insurance if you own a registered and licensed car — that’s the law in New Jersey. However, since you’re not driving it during the lapse and since this is such a short period of time, you probably don’t have to worry about a collision or accident. But you won’t be protected if someone hits your parked car or if your garage floods.

      It’s worth asking both your new provider and your old provider if either would be willing to prorate — which means to charge you at a similar daily rate to what you were paying before — for an extra few days of coverage to protect you during this small lapse. After all, you’re a paying customer, and someone may be able to work with you.

      You can also look into short-term car insurance coverage. This way you’re covered if you do need to drive the car during that span — say, during an emergency.
