Expert review

The Fuelman Diesel Platinum Fleet Card is a closed-loop card that’s valid within the Fuelman network, which includes Exxon, Shell, Valero and other locations. It offers purchase controls, detailed transaction reporting and rebates on diesel fuel purchased in the Fuelman Network. Based on your purchase volume, you can earn rebates of up to 8 cents per gallon.

Unfortunately, FLEETCOR — the card issuer — doesn’t disclose purchase minimums upfront for rebates. You’ll see these amounts only after you’re approved for the card. Furthermore, FLEETCOR may charge steep administrative fees of up to 10 cents per gallon or $2 per transaction. These can essentially erase what you’ll earn in rebates.

Card benefits

  • Rebates on diesel fuel.
The more your purchase, the higher your rebates. However, you won’t know you much you need to spend to get your rebates until after approval, and rebates come with other stipulations.
  • Card purchase controls.
Set purchase limits by dollar amount, gallons, fuel and maintenance purchases only. You can also require vehicle IDs, drivers IDs and odometer readings before purchase.
  • Monitor transactions in real-time.
Through the iFleet online dashboard, you can view transactions as they occur and manage your account.
  • Fraud monitoring.
If there’s an unusual transaction on one of the fleet cards, you’ll receive an alert by text and email.

Which brands will I find in the Fuelman Network?

The following are a few major brands you’ll find in the Fuelman collection:

  • ARCO
  • BP
  • Chevron
  • Circle K
  • Conoco
  • Exxon
  • Firestone
  • Flying J
  • Jiffy Lube
  • Loves
  • Meineke
  • Midas
  • Murphy USA
  • Shell
  • Sinclair
  • Sunoco
  • TA
  • Texaco
  • Valero
  • Walmart

What to watch out for

  • Closed-loop card.
This card is valid only within the Fuelman Network.
  • Certain purchases are ineligible for volume rebates.
Aviation spending, international fuel purchases, bulk fuel and spending at some non-qualifying merchants won’t earn rebates.
  • Non-revolving account.
You must pay your balance in full after each billing period or you’ll pay a late fee and interest at variable APR on your balance.
  • A security deposit may be required.
If you have poor credit, Fleetcor may ask you to pay a security deposit. In this case, your credit line is 80% of your deposit.
  • Fees.
This card has many fees that can cut into your rebates, including fees at 10 cents per gallon, or $2 per transaction, and $10 monthly per card.

    What is a high-risk account?

If your account is high-risk, Fleetcor may add up to a 30-cent-per-gallon fee on the fuel you purchase. Your account may be deemed high-risk if:

    • Your commercial credit score is below 530.
    • Your personal credit score is below 670.
    • Within a three-month rolling period, your credit score decreases by 51 points or more.
    • Within a 12-month rolling period, you’ve incurred more than one late fee.

How to apply for the Fuelman Diesel Platinum Fleet Card

    1. Go to the Fuelman website. Then click Apply now.
    2. Enter personal and business details. These might include your business contact information, number of vehicles, business annual income and more.
    3. Review your information and submit your application.

What credit score do I need?

If you have at least a fair credit score of 580, you may qualify for this card. Ultimately, approval decisions are up to Fleetcor, and you’ll increase your odds with a higher credit score.

    Bottom line

This card’s volume rebates are impressive, but they’re overshadowed by a long list of fees. Most notably, the administrative fee of 10 cents per gallon or $2 per transaction could erase the discounts you get.

If a fleet card doesn’t seem to be the right fit, try a small-business gas card.
