Expert review

The Fuelman Advantage Platinum Mastercard is a fleet credit card with an annual fee that can reach up to $120. In addition, expect to pay a lot of fees, including a $150 late payment fee or higher, a $50 ACH or wire payment fee, and up to 10 cents per gallon minimum program admission fee. All this makes it an expensive card to own.

On the positive side, you get fuel rebates and tire purchase discounts at select retailers. Unfortunately, this may not be enough to offset the cost of owning the card.

Because of that, reconsider using the Fuelman Advantage Platinum Mastercard. Compare other business cards with rewards on gas purchases and you will likely find a better option.

What to watch out for

  • Fees.
The card is full of various fees you could be charged with.

    • Late payment fees of 10.99% of the balance or $150, whichever is greater
    • Up to a $10 monthly card fee — that’s up to $120 annually per card or $1,200 for ten cards
    • Up to 10 cents per gallon minimum program admission fee, which cancels out the potential 6 cents off per gallon deal
    • Up to $15 for each optional fleet report
    • Up to $25 check by phone fee
    • Up to $50 one-time EFT payment method set-up, and up to $5 every time you pay via this method
    • Up to $50 fee for processing each client initiated EFT/ACH/Wire payment
    • Up to 0.9% foreign transaction fee and up to 0.2% currency conversion assessment fee
    • High-risk credit account fees and security deposit.
Accounts that are deemed high risk will incur $5 per transaction or 2% of your account’s spend limit fee per billing cycle, whichever is greater.
  • High-risk accounts also need to make a secured deposit to act as a credit line for 80% of the amount. This means you need to deposit $10,000 to get an $8,000 credit line.
  • Fuel discounts exclusions.
You won’t get volume rebates on aviation, bulk fuel, international fuel purchases and transactions at non-qualifying gasoline merchants.

Card benefits

    • Fuel discounts.
Earn up to 3 cents off per gallon on volume rebates and up to 3 cents off per gallon when fueling at the Fuelman Discount Network. Note that the threshold to get the 3 cents volume rebate is 30,000 or more gallons in a month. This is many times higher than the competitor cards’ volume threshold.
    • Maintenance rebates.
Get a 5% rebate on purchases at Firestone and Tires Plus retail locations through the Mastercard Easy Savings Network.
  • Control employee spending.
Set spending limits either by driver or vehicle, re-string purchase categories and reduce fraud with required ID and odometer reading for authorization.

Bottom line

If you’re looking for a fleet card to save you money on fuel purchases, this may not be a good option. The Fuelman Advantage Platinum Mastercard comes stacked with so many fees that you’ll likely incur some each billing cycle, which will offset any potential value this card could offer.

Consider any other business credit card as an alternative to meet your business needs.
