In business since 1976, Finish Line is one of the most well-known athletic footwear retailers for decades. Despite several market downturns throughout the years, this company has maintained a steady customer base, both in stores and online. A 2003 spat between Foot Locker — Finish Line’s largest competitor — and Nike resulted in a big boom for business, as Nike limited the top-tier styles that it made available to Foot Locker.
Finish Line earns mixed reviews online. Some customers say they’ve had nothing but good experiences shopping here and feel that the retailer offers a great value on high-quality products.
Others say they’ve had issues with poor customer service, canceled or late orders and problems returning items that were purchased as a gift.
Finish Line got its start in 1976 when David Klapper and Alan Cohen opened an Athlete’s Foot franchise store in Indianapolis. Business was so successful that the pair bought another nine Athlete’s Foot stores and entered into a ten-year franchise agreement. But Klapper and Cohen soon felt that there was something missing from their stores, which only sold specialty footwear. While still operating their ten stores for the length of their franchise agreement, the duo opened their own much larger store called Finish Line.
Finish Line stores had the space to sell footwear, apparel and accessories, catering to a broader customer base. By the time their franchise agreement was up with Athlete’s Foot, the pair had already opened 25 Finish Line stores.
Today, the company remains a popular footwear retailer, offering the latest Nike and Jordan releases, as well as retro styles — a large source of revenue.
