Farm Bureau offers solid homeowners insurance options that can fully cover the value of your house. It can have competitive rates and its agents offer personalized service. But you can’t get a quote online, and have to pay an annual membership fee to keep your insurance.

Compare home insurance companies to see how Farm Bureau stands up to its competitors and find the best option for your home.

What home insurance coverage does Farm Bureau offer?

Farm Bureau offers various coverage options that can protect your home and personal belongings.

  • Guaranteed replacement cost. For an additional cost, you can get an extra 25% of your dwelling coverage if it costs more to rebuild your home than your policy limits.
  • Hobby farm coverage. Farm Bureau offers a different, often more competitive program for homes that are out in the country and may include acreage and outbuildings. Farming can’t be the primary source of income for this country home insurance program.
  • Homesharing. Farm Bureau offers coverage if you rent your home through sites such as Airbnb or Vrbo.
  • Liability. If you’re at-fault for someone else’s injuries, liability coverage covers their injuries and any lawsuit expenses.
  • Replacement cost.Insure your home for the full cost to replace it with similar type and quality building materials.
  • Valuable contents. While your household contents are covered automatically, you can also insure extra items for their full cost, such as jewelry, boats or antiques.
  • Water backup. If you have water damage from broken pipes or your sump pump fails, this coverage will pay for repairs.

What home insurance discounts can I get?

Farm Bureau offers fewer home insurance discounts than other companies, but these options can still help you save money. Each state’s Farm Bureaus are run separately and independently, which means discount availability and amounts can vary between states.

  • Loyalty. Continuing to renew your home insurance with Farm Bureau each year will net you some extra savings.
  • Multipolicy. Having both your home and your auto insurance with Farm Bureau saves you money on both policies.
  • New home. If you have a newer home that’s in great condition, you can receive this discount.
  • New roof. Having a new roof that’s in great condition can also save you some money on your premiums.
  • Security system. Alarm systems help protect your home and can also save you extra money on your home insurance with Farm Bureau.

Pros and cons of Farm Bureau

Pros

  • Single deductible. If you bundle your home and auto policies, you’ll have only one deductible if both are damaged in the same covered accident. Many insurance companies don’t offer this feature.
  • Personalized service. Local agents can help make sure that you have adequate coverage for your home and other assets.
  • Strong financial ratings. Each state’s Farm Bureau has its own ratings, but most enjoy A+ ratings from the Better Business Bureau as of January 2020. And the company ranked highly in the 2019 J.D. Power customer satisfaction survey.
  • Competitive rates. Farm Bureau often has low rates — and might be the cheapest insurance option for you without sacrificing coverage.

Cons

  • Membership fee. To have insurance with Farm Bureau, you’ll have to pay a fee. Primary member fees vary by state, but is usually between $20 and $75 a year. Your fees go towards supporting your state’s agricultural activities. And you’ll receive various discounts for being a member.
  • Limited availability. Farm Bureau sells insurance directly in 19 states, mainly in the Midwest and Southeast. Members can still get insurance and discounts through affiliate companies in an additional 10 Mountain West states.
  • Can’t get a quote online. Farm Bureau doesn’t offer any online quoting. You’ll have to find a local agent and get a quote from them before deciding on membership.

How to apply for Farm Bureau home insurance

Farm Bureau doesn’t offer online quotes, so you’ll need to contact an agent through its website. Note that Farm Bureau has a different website for each state it operates in, so be sure to find your state’s site to contact the agent closest to you.

  1. Go to the Farm Bureau website.
  2. Enter your ZIP code to find a list of agents nearby.
  3. Select an gent and either call or email to schedule an appointment.
