Along with less humidity and an excuse to drink hot lattes again, new fashion is one of our favorite parts of fall. This transition season is all about refreshing your wardrobe with light layers and unexpected details. You may even be able to repurpose some of your favorite summer pieces well into the season.
This year, you may be spending much more time in your own abode. Pick pieces that feel luxuriously soft and cozy, but still slay in your Zoom meetings and dates.

Flowing silhouettes with plenty of frill are perfect for transition weather — that mild phase between sun-drenched days and biting nights. Floral or paisley prints are dominating the “new arrivals” feed of most designer sites right now, in warm coral or deep rust hues versus cooler blues and greens.
You’ll even find a few pleated skirts a la early aughts, but modernized for 2020. To keep the look fashion, and not a throwback to your pep squad days, eschew micro minis for an option that hits mid-thigh or lower. Pair with an oversize coat or structured blazer when the temps drop.

We’re seeing ruching details on everything from bra tops and biker shorts to jumpsuits, proving the ’90s aren’t going anywhere. Especially in clingy fabrics like satin, ruching lends a forgiving aspect to an otherwise form-fitting outfit.

From lopsided shoulders to dress hems, you’ll find asymmetric cuts on slouchy tops and sweaters as well as the prettiest prairie dresses. And nothing gives a flowy dress some edge like a handkerchief hem or high slit. Think of it as the outfit version of intentionally messy, woke-up-like-this hair.
Whether you’re buttoned-up, zipped-up or dolled-up, slightly oversize coats and jackets are go-to looks this season. Long blazers and cape-like coats look functional for work or play. And your trench will be so loose and cozy, it can double as a blanket.
Blazers are also having a moment, in looser fits than previous seasons.
More stylish than a muumuu but just as comfy, ribbed cardigan dresses and dusters are everywhere right now. They’re soft, they’re figure-skimming — and they look equally appropriate for binge-watching sessions on the couch and meeting a work deadline. Grab one in a neutral shade like olive or beige and it’s guaranteed to look chic next year too.

U and V-necks gave way to the square this summer. Square neck bodysuits and sweater tanks were warm-weather staples, but look for the trend in fall dresses and 3/4-sleeved bodysuits. And layer that sweater tank under a new leather or denim jacket.
Not exactly an everyday look but still super cute — wearing lingerie as clothing is a trend that’s only grown. Pair a lacy black cami with a loose-fitting blazer and black jeans and you’re ready for a night out.
Looking for something a little more subtle? Wear a cream-colored top with a plunging neckline so bits of your bralette peek out — cute, on-trend and understated.

Trade in your light summer kimono for something cozier. Oversize capes, ruanas and poncho scarves are some of the cutest ways to stay warm this season.
One of the best parts about these looks is their versatility: Throw on a statement-making layer to instantly update any basic outfit. And to stay on-trend, look for classic patterns like houndstooth.

Thought floral print was just for spring? Expect to see the ultra-feminine print on a bevy of midi and maxi dresses perfect for layering under a sweater or jacket. Side cutouts and tie-backs keep the look sweet yet a little sexy.
Instead of large, vibrant flowers a la our favorite beach-ready dresses, hone in on more subtle prints in richer, fall-friendly hues.
