Facebook announces Oculus Go, a new standalone virtual reality headset
The new headset sits between the mobile-focused Gear VR and the full-blown Oculus Rift.
Oculus, the virtual reality company acquired by Facebook back in 2014, has announced a new VR headset at its Oculus Connect event today.
Dubbed Oculus Go, this new headset is a standalone device that won’t require slotting in your phone like Samsung’s Gear VR or connecting to a high-end PC like the Oculus Rift. When Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the device, he pitched it as an affordable means of getting more people into VR, with his lofty goal for Oculus reaching a total of 1 billion VR users.
Oculus Go is set to release in early 2018 for $199. The Go will sport a 2560×1440 screen resolution and built-in audio playback for use without headphones. Like the Gear VR, it’ll use a custom-designed controller that functions like a cross between a TV remote and a full gamepad. The similarity with the Gear VR’s controller will reportedly make it easier for developers to build games and experiences compatible with both Gear VR and Oculus Go.
