Expensify Card review

A helpful, if flawed, business product if you use the Expensify app.

  • Get this card if you want automatic expense tracking that’s synced with the Expensify app.
  • Pick something else if you want rewards, a signup bonus or an interest grace period. Depending on your spending and business needs, these can be glaring omissions.
  • You’re welcome to apply with any credit score, but there must be sufficient funds in your bank account to settle purchases daily.

Expert review

Put simply, Expensify is an app that lets you scan or enter details of your receipts. Then it automatically creates expense reports and reimburses employees from your connected bank account.

The Expensify Card is designed to work with the Expensify app. When you use the card, your transactions will automatically be logged in your Expensify account. You can easily see details such as transaction amounts, transaction dates and purchase categories.

The card itself doesn’t have an annual fee but the Expensify service costs either $5 per user per month or $9 per user per month for a subscription depending on the features you want. This isn’t always cheap. Companies with large number of employees will pay a hefty sum. For example, 50 cardholders running on the $9 monthly plan will cost the company $5,400 each year. On the other hand, individuals and sole proprietors can get up to 25 smart scans each month for free. The upgrade to unlimited scans costs $5 per month or $60 annually, which is way more acceptable.

How to apply for Expensify

  1. On the Expensify Card page, enter your email address.
  2. Click Enable my Expensify Card.
  3. Expensify will send you an email with further instructions. Open this email and click on the link within.
  4. To apply for the Expensify Card, enter information about your bank account, company, yourself and beneficial owners.

What credit score do I need?

Expensify says it doesn’t weigh your personal credit history or your FICO score in its approval decisions. What’s important, according to the company, is that you have funds in your bank account to pay off your purchases with the card.

Card benefits

  • No costs or interest.
There are no fees or penalties with the Expensify Card, and you won’t incur interest because you pay off your transactions every day. You don’t have to enter into contracts or personally guarantee your debt.

While the card itself doesn’t have fees, you’ll pay a fee for the Expensify app — either $5 per user per month or $9 per user per month for a subscription, depending on which features you want. Note that pricing may be different based on the type of plan you want. For example, the app is more expensive if you forgo a subscription for a pay-per-use plan.

  • Control employee spending on your card.
As with other business credit cards, the Expensify Card lets you set employee spending limits. You can set limits on unapproved expenses, and you can prompt employees to upload receipts if you choose. Unlike most competitors, however, the card lets you decrease your fees. You can save 50% off your Expensify monthly fees when you use your card for at least half of your monthly business expenses.
  • Automatic eReceipts.
When you use the Expensify Card, the transaction will be logged in the Expensify app. You’ll also get an eReceipt you can use for tax returns. This is helpful because you won’t have to scan receipts into the Expensify app. Keep in mind very large purchases might not generate guaranteed eReceipts.
  • Compliance measures.
When employees use the Expensify Card, they’ll be prompted to add purchase details or scan receipts if necessary. According to Expensify, expense reports are automatically generated for most purchases.
  • Perks from Expensify partners.
As an Expensify cardmember, you can redeem perks and discounts from Expensify’s partners. For example, you can earn $5,000 in credits from Amazon Web Services or get 50% off Quickbooks for 12 months. Typically, all you have to do is sign up for the service with your Expensify Card.

Make charitable donations when you use your card

With each purchase with your Expensify Card, Expensify will forward 10% of the company’s card to charitable causes in five categories. These include Climate, Homes, Hunger, Reentry and Youth.

Your company can donate by activating Corporate Offsets. When you do, you’ll donate $2 for every $1,000 in approved transactions.

What to watch out for

  • Funds are drawn daily from your bank account.
Most business credit cards let you pay off accrued debt after you receive your billing statement. However, the Expensify Card uses a daily-settlement policy and will charge your bank account every day for purchases made on your card.
  • No rewards.
While many business credit cards offer rewards for your spending, you won’t find points, cash back or miles with the Expensify Card. But you’ll trigger a donation to Expensify.org with each transaction.
  • No signup bonus.
With other business credit cards, it’s not uncommon to earn signup bonuses worth $500 to $800 after you meet spend requirements.

Bottom line

The Expensify Card can make expense management easier by automatically uploading transaction details to your Expensify dashboard. In this sense, the card can be a great tool for your business that increases efficiency. You’ll get access to spending controls and automatic eReceipts.

At the same time, the card lacks rewards or a signup bonus, which are major omissions. And because the card requires daily purchase settlement, you won’t get the 30- to 60-day grace period you’ll find with other business products.

If you want rewards or a signup bonus, consider other business credit cards.
