Alternative exchanges and sites like Poloniex

Look beyond this early crypto-to-crypto exchange to alternatives in the market.

Poloniex was among the earliest exchanges to offer features like margin trading, lending and support for specific altcoins. But recent “know your customer” updates to its account verification policy and an influx of exchanges entering the scene have motivated some crypto traders to look for Poloniex alternatives.

Must read: Kraken: An overlooked option

One exchange that’s grown a lot in recent months is Kraken. Kraken offers margin trading that’s on par with Poloniex — a feature that not too many exchanges support. On top of that, Kraken lets you deposit and withdraw US dollars directly, which can make it a more convenient option than Poloniex.

Pros

  • Wide selection of cryptocurrencies.
  • Both fiat and crypto transactions allowed.
  • Supports margin trading options.
  • Strong security infrastructure.

Cons

  • Tier-based fees can be high on some trades.
  • Volume isn’t as high as alternatives.
  • Verification required to increase deposit and withdrawal limits.

If you’re mostly interested in trading cryptocurrencies, alternatives to Poloniex offer a solid selection of coins with comparable trading fees. For margin traders, however, Kraken’s services are probably most like Poloniex’s.

Why you might want to avoid Poloniex

  • It is not very beginner-friendly. Poloniex lacks the streamlined user experience associated with some newer exchanges. It can be difficult to navigate if you aren’t familiar with trading interfaces.
  • It has had withdrawal issues in the past. Almost all exchanges experience occasional issues with deposits and/or withdrawals related to certain currencies. Many users have reported particular difficulty Poloniex transactions, however.
  • Customer support is minimal. If you have an issue using Poloniex, opening a customer support ticket is pretty much the only recourse. Numerous users have reported waiting weeks or months for receiving a response.
  • No fiat support. Poloniex is a crypto only exchange, so you can’t deposit or withdrawal fiat currency.

Where else to find Poloniex’s features?

While Poloniex does offer a variety of services, it is not the easiest exchange to use. Depending on what you’re looking for, there are a few alternatives that might be worth checking out.

Where else to find a wide selection of cryptocurrencies?

Poloniex boasts an extensive selection of cryptocurrencies and several trading pairs. Historically, there were not too many exchanges that provided such a wide selection. Today, however, there are quite a few. If you’re looking for a huge selection of altcoins, one exchange that is worth checking out is KuCoin. KuCoin offers:

  • Extremely wide selection of cryptocurrencies
  • Some unique trading pairs
  • On-platform token that rewards users
  • Sign up using only an email address

Bottom line

You can tell Poloniex is an older exchange by looking at its user interface, which is a bit complicated and not ideal for beginners. At the same time, Poloniex does offer some great opportunities for more advanced traders like margin and lending options. If you know your way around a candlestick chart and an order book and you don’t mind a bare-bones user interface, Poloniex is worth checking out.
