Everlywell COVID-19 test kit review
Get your results within two business days with this nasal swab test, and book a free consult if you’re positive.
The Everlywell COVID-19 PCR test received Federal Drug Administration (FDA) authorization in May 2020. It was once prescription-only, but is available to the public as of February 2021. The kit is one of the cheapest on the market, but the company doesn’t accept insurance — so you’ll need to pay out of pocket.
How does the Everlywell COVID-19 test work?
Everlywell’s at-home test is a nasal swab kit. To collect your sample, tilt your head back 45 degrees and insert the swab into the lower part of your nostril — about one inch. Rotate the swab three times, then repeat on the other nostril.
When you’re done, seal the swab in the package provided, then send it back to the lab for analysis. Everywell partners with a network of labs nationally, and the address will be included on your return package. For the most accurate results, you must drop off your sample at your nearest UPS on the same day — which means you’ll want to take the test sometime between Monday and Friday.
What happens next?
You’ll receive an email with your results within 24 to 48 hours of the lab receiving your sample.
If you test positive for COVID-19, you’ll be able to book a free telehealth consultation with a board-certified physician via Everlywell’s portal. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss your diagnosis and tips for recovery — such as self-isolation.
“Additionally, all COVID-19 customers have the option to initiate a call with our telehealth partner by using the phone number at the bottom of their results. Of course, we also always encourage our customers to also loop in their personal healthcare provider for collaborative, long-term care,” an Everlywell spokesperson tells Finder.
Can I reuse the Everlywell COVID-19 test kit?
No. The kit is single-use, and you only need to send one nasal swab to the lab.
Is the Everlywell test FDA-approved?
No. Like all other at-home tests on the market, the FDA gave the Everlywell COVID-19 Test Home Collection Kit an emergency use authorization (EUA). This means the public can access the test during the pandemic — and once we’re out of a national state of emergency, the test will go through the FDA approval process. It’s a rigorous one that can take anywhere from a few months to several years.
Is the Everlywell COVID-19 test accurate?
The diagnostic test has a 95% accuracy rate for positive results and 98% for negative results, according to the FDA. These numbers are comparable with other at-home tests and based on clinical trials Everlywell ran as part of the EUA process.
When should I take the at-home test?
COVID-19 has an incubation period of four to 14 days, according to the CDC. Everlywell points its customers to that guidance, and advises them to take the test a few days after possible exposure.
Am I eligible to get the Everlywell COVID-19 test?
Yes, as long as you’re 18 or older. The test is available for “broad use without a prescription, including purchase by asymptomatic individuals,” according to Everlywell’s updated EUA from the FDA, dated February 17, 2021.
Where is the Everlywell COVID-19 test available?
The test is available for order nationwide.
How can I buy the Everlywell COVID-19 test?
Buy the test kit on Everlywell’s site for now, and it will be sold at brick-and-mortar stores soon.
“These details are still to be finalized, but Everlywell expects its tests to be available at retailers with nationwide presence,” a spokesperson confirms with Finder.
Once your order is processed, Everlywell ships the kit in one to two business days, and you’ll receive it within two to 10 business days. When you receive your kit, you’ll need to register its unique ID online before collecting your sample.
How much does the Everlywell COVID-19 test cost?
The Everlywell COVID-19 test costs $109 out of pocket, or you can pay with your HSA/FSA. This price includes standard inbound shipping, overnight outbound shipping and a telemedicine consult if you test positive.
Choose overnight shipping at checkout for an additional $20.
Does health insurance cover the cost?
Everlywell can’t bill your insurance directly, but it can send you an itemized receipt so you can submit a claim on your own. Under federal law, private insurers must cover the cost of COVID-19 diagnostic tests.
However, if you’re on Medicare, you’ll be on the hook for the $109.
