ShipStation review

Last updated:

It integrates with hundreds of platforms, but customer support is limited.

ShipStation helps expedite the order fulfillment process with discounted shipping rates, reporting tools and hundreds of marketplace integrations. And it offers a free 30-day trial to try its software. But phone support is only available in its most expensive service tier and customers warn of order update delays.

  • Choose this provider if you want to brand your shipping labels and don’t mind online tech support.
  • Consider something else if you prefer customer support available by phone or use an e-commerce provider outside ShipStation’s partner network.

What is ShipStation?

ShipStation is a web-based shipping software company. Founded in 2011 with headquarters in Austin, Texas, it helps online businesses process and ship orders with carrier rate comparisons, branded shipping labels and the ability to automate a variety of shipping tasks. It integrates with hundreds of e-commerce marketplaces and shopping carts and offers prenegotiated shipping rates with FedEx, UPS, USPS and DHL.

Features

ShipStation’s features include inventory management, branded shipping labels and prenegotiated shipping rates:

  • Order management. Combine, split, filter, edit and set alerts on orders based on set preferences from ShipStation’s order management hub.
  • Discounted shipping labels. Connect to major US carriers, browse prenegotiated discounted shipping rates and print labels and shipping documents through ShipStation’s Rate Browser.
  • Branded shipping. Add your company’s logo to shipping labels, packing slips and emails and create a branded tracking page for customers.
  • Inventory management. Manage inventory with low inventory alerts and tools to help you allocate stock waiting to be shipped.

Pricing and fees

ShipStation has six service tiers for businesses large and small. It even offers a service tier for high-volume businesses that ship over 10,000 orders monthly, with rates that vary by business.

No matter which ShipStation service tier you select, you’ll gain access to the features, reporting, administrative tools and integrations — with two exceptions. Order importing is unavailable in the Starter tier, and customized packing slips are unavailable in the Starter and Bronze tiers.

You can also add users to any service tier for an additional $5 per month.

Reporting tools

ShipStation’s in-house reporting offers access to order and inventory analytics:

  • Order reporting. ShipStation’s order management hub generates reports with filter and export features that allow you to review data by order deport, product and shipment record.
  • Inventory reporting. ShipStation’s inventory reporting tool offers real-time inventory data, including low-stock reports, out-of-stock shipment logs and stock status updates of individual SKUs.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Integrations. Worried ShipStation won’t sync with your preferred marketplace? It integrates with a whopping 296 sales channels, shopping carts and shipping carriers.
  • 30-day free trial. Explore ShipStation’s software free for 30 days — no credit card required.
  • Multiple service tiers. With six distinct service tiers, ShipStation’s offerings can be used by startups and enterprises.
  • Transparent pricing. ShipStation’s monthly fees are stated on a dedicated pricing page on its website.

Cons

  • Limited support. Should you hit a roadblock or have a question, your options are limited to online support unless you pay into the top-shelf Enterprise tier.
  • Order update delays. A handful of negative reviews mention order updates being delayed as long as 24 hours.

ShipStation reviews and complaints

As of October 2020, ShipStation reviews are mostly positive. While feedback on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot is limited, its Facebook rating is 4.3 out of 5 based on 399 customer reviews.

ShipStation’s BBB reputation offers little to go on. It’s an accredited business with an A rating and averages 1 out of 5 stars — but its star rating comes from the feedback of only two customers. The lack of official BBB complaints is more telling: It has only four complaints to its name. For a nine-year-old business, this is an admirably clean record.

Like its BBB presence, ShipStation’s Trustpilot page is similarly sparse. It has a TrustScore of 3.5 out of 5 based on only 5 customer reviews.

Merchants praise ShipStation’s many integrations and ease of use. A number of reviews also suggest ShipStation has helped merchants save time by streamlining the shipping process.

Negative reviews mention long wait times for both chat and phone support. Some report various bugs and connectivity issues, including delayed PayPal purchase updates, USPS uploading timeouts and eBay integration errors.
