Downpour review

Last updated:

An audiobook service that offers a vast catalog, and cross-device syncing — but no free trial.

When it rains, it pours: there are over 80,000 audiobook titles across literally hundreds — maybe even thousands — of categories on Downpour. A subscription service that runs neck and neck with Kobo, you pay a monthly fee and earn credits toward buying new audiobooks.

Its website and app are sleek and easy-to-use, but its book rental system could be better and the app rapidly leaves Android batteries high and dry.

What is Downpour?

Downpour is an audiobook provider that offers a flexible credit subscription for $12.99 per month — a price comparable to Kobo. With that, you get a generous 12-month expiry period and the ability to buy new credits for the same price if you need more than the one that comes with your plan every month. Your membership renews each month, but you can cancel at any time.

Also, Downpour allows you to rent audiobooks at a reduced price for either 30 or 60 days. Plus, you’re free to increase the loan period for an additional fee, if you need it. And if you want to own it afterwards, you may — but at the full list price.

However, there’s one user note: Only 97% of audiobooks are included in your subscription — and there are several books that cost more than one credit, something truly avid readers might consider. But it has a generous library of audiobooks to choose from, and the selection seems to be consistently growing.

With Downpour , you can access its content either through the app or a browser. It boasts a seamless cross-device synching, but Android users report the app quickly sucks their batteries dry.

Pros and cons

As always, weigh out the pros and cons of any service to help you decide:

  • Nicely designed, easy-to-navigate app
  • The option to rent audiobooks at a reduced rate
  • Flexible credit system
  • Some books are geoblocked depending on region
  • Outpriced by the similar Kobo and has no trial period
  • Library still lags behind bigger services

Expert review

Downpour lets loose with an audiobook catalog that competes well with Audiobooks and Kobo for a comparable price, and offers an easy-to-navigate app that syncs all your devices. But battery beware if you’re an Android user, and not all books are accessible based on your location. Also, with the lack of a free trial offer, it’s hard to try it on before buying.

As with any service or product, compare audiobook services beforehand to be sure it meets your specific needs.
