Delta Medallion status: How does it work and why you should get it

Climb the ranks to earn more miles and perks on your Delta flights.

Delta Medallion status is a system within SkyMiles that awards additional perks and rewards based on your ranking. To go up the ranks, you need to amass a certain combination of Medallion Qualification Miles, Medallion Qualification Segments, and Medallion Qualification Dollars. Here’s how to climb the tiers and the benefits you can get with each.

Medallion status tiers

There are four Medallion status levels: Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. As you progress through each tier, you earn additional perks that build upon the last tier. The most notable benefit from gaining status levels is the increase in Delta SkyMiles you earn per dollar spent.

Bonus mileage earnings

SkyMiles members can earn up to 11x miles per dollar on Delta flights depending on their Medallion status.

Flight benefits

Medallion Members may get upgraded to higher fare classes upon request. The higher Medallion Status you have, the more likely you are to get upgraded. Note that none of these statuses are available for E fares, award tickets, Miles + Cash tickets or Pay with Miles tickets.

What are Medallion Qualification Miles

Delta’s elite-status flyers are called Medallion Members. To reach Medallion Status, you must earn a combination of elite qualifiers:

  • Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs).
  • Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs).
  • Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs).

Let’s break down what these are and how to earn them.

Medallion Status qualificationAbbreviationWhat they’re based onEarnings

In higher fare classes, you might earn 1.5 or 2 MQMs per mile of your flight

To qualify for the first elite tier, you need around 10 round trips between LAX and JFK on a basic fare. You can drop this down to around five round trips by flying on Comfort+ fare.

MQD waivers

MQD waivers allow you to waive the MQD requirement of a status tier. You can earn a waiver by spending a certain amount in eligible purchases in a calendar year with an eligible Amex Delta SkyMiles credit card.

You can’t use a Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles Gold card to earn a waiver unless you have another eligible Delta SkyMiles credit card.

Bottom line

While the upper levels of the Medallion program take effort to achieve, even the entry-level tier has plenty of value worth your attention. If you regularly fly Delta or are considering a Delta credit card, it may well be worth your time to pursue Medallion status. However, it all comes down to how often you think you’ll use the attached benefits at each tier level.
