Expert review

Dakota Community Bank can be a great option for farmers and ranchers. Its team of loan officers are experts in the agriculture industry and offer a range of farmer-friendly loan programs, including FSA, USDA and Farmer Mac financing. Other local business owners can also apply for SBA loans and your standard personal business lending options — including a robust vehicle financing program.

But there are no online reviews so you’ll have to ask around to get an idea of what to expect as a customer. It also isn’t open on Saturdays so you might have to meet during business hours.

What is Dakota Community Bank?

Dakota Community Bank & Trust is a local bank with branches across the Southwest area of North Dakota. It's a locally owned bank with customer satisfaction at the forefront of its mission. It aims to combine old-fashioned service with modern banking technology.

What types of loans are available?

You can find the following types of loans through Dakota Community Bank:

  • SBA loans. Dakota Community Bank offers financing backed by the Small Business Administration (SBA), including loans through the 504 program.
  • Business lines of credit. This gives you access to a credit limit that you can draw cash from at any time for small or unexpected expenses.
  • Equipment financing. A loan backed by the equipment you want to buy, usually with terms determined by the useful life of your purchase.
  • Commercial real estate loans. Financing to buy property or a facility — usually with options for refinancing or construction.
  • FSA-guaranteed loans. Loans backed by the Farm Service Administration to cover operating expenses, land purchases and more.
  • Farmer Mac loans. Low-cost financing for agricultural businesses through the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation, known as Farmer Mac.
  • Rural Development Loans. Financing backed by the US Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Administration for rural agricultural businesses.
  • Personal loans and lines of credit. Financing to pay for a one-time cost or access to cash for a long-term project like home improvements with no collateral requirements.
  • Auto loans. Financing to buy a new vehicle and auto loan refinancing — with no minimum or maximum loan amount.
  • Boat and recreational vehicle financing. Funding to purchase other vehicles, backed by the vehicle as collateral.
  • Home equity loans and lines of credit. Financing backed by the value of your home for a larger amount or lower rate than you'd qualify for otherwise.
  • Mortgages. Dakota Community Bank offers a variety of mortgages, including first-time homebuyer, VA, FHA and rural housing loans.

What industries does it specialize in?

Dakota Community Bank has several lending programs specifically for agriculture businesses, including USDA loan programs and Farmer Mac financing. It also offers a special loan for future farmers called the Foundation Female Program, which awards applicants 0% interest loans to seventh or eighth graders to buy five bred heifers that they can use to start a cattle herd. Currently the Foundation Female Program is on hold.

How does borrowing with Dakota Community Bank work?

You have to set up an appointment with a loan officer to get started on the application. But before you go in, you can download a copy of the paper application and a financial statement worksheet on the Dakota Community Bank website.

Typically, you'll go over your finances with the loan officer and discuss what you're looking for, and what they think would suit your business best. The application can take several weeks the first time around. But ideally your loan officer will get to know your business well enough to anticipate your financing needs ahead of time.

How to get started

You can get started by contacting a member of Dakota Community Bank's loan officers at a branch in your area.

  1. Go to the Dakota Community Bank website.
  2. Choose Loans and select Loan officers.
  3. Scroll down to the location in your area.
  4. Review your options — some branches only have one officer — and call to set up an appointment.
