History of CryptoPunks Collection

CryptoPunks are a collection of NFTs created by development studio Larva Labs. CryptoPunks were first released to the public in June 2017. At the time of their release, anyone with an Ethereum wallet could freely claim them. However, all 10,000 were quickly claimed and now have to be bought. Larva Labs holds 1,000 CryptoPunks, but the remaining 9,000 can be bought on various NFT marketplaces including OpenSea and Larva Labs’ website.

When CryptoPunks first hit the market, they cost between $1 and $34. Over the years, they have become quite popular and expensive. They can now be sold for millions. The most popular CryptoPunk was sold in June 2021 for $11.7 million to Shalom Meckenzie, an Israeli entrepreneur and billionaire. Another one was sold for $7.57 million to the CEO of Figma.

How to buy on OpenSea

The all-time average price of CryptoPunks is 42.406 ETH ($102,684), so expect to pay around that cost to secure an NFT in the collection:
  1. Fund your wallet with cryptocurrency to buy your NFT.
Most NFTs on OpenSea are bought and sold using Ether, the native crypto on the Ethereum blockchain. Make sure you have enough ETH in your wallet to cover the cost of the NFT and any related fees, like gas. If you're a bit short, compare ways to buy ETH to reload your wallet.
  2. Find your NFT on OpenSea
OpenSea has hundreds of thousands of NFTs listed, so consider looking through collections to help narrow down the selection. If you're after an NFT from the collection, we've listed some on this page for your convenience.
  3. Transfer ETH to a web3 wallet
MetaMask is a popular web3 wallet option, and our guide on MetaMask has detailed instructions on how to make the transfer.
  4. Buy your NFT
When you're ready to make your purchase, click the "Buy Now" button on the specific NFT you're interested in. OpenSea will show you the total cost, including fees, and after purchasing be sure to approve the transaction in your MetaMask wallet.

Evaluating CryptoPunks Collection

CryptoPunks come as male and female humans, zombies, aliens and apes. Most of them are in human form. There are 6,039 male punks, 3,840 female punks, 88 green-skinned zombie punks, 24 hirsute ape punks and 9 light-blue-skinned alien punks.

Each CryptoPunk has its own ostensible personality and unique combination of distinctive features. They are mainly distinguished by their accessories. For example, 696 punks are wearing hot lipstick, 44 are wearing beanie hats, 54 are wearing pilot helmets, 124 have spots, 136 have wild white hair, 146 have big beards and 572 have nerd glasses.

The more accessories a CryptoPunk has, the more expensive it is to buy. The most accessories a single crypto punk can have are 7, making it incredibly rare and expensive. Non-human CryptoPunks are also expensive and rare as there are not many in the market. Like human CryptoPunks, non-human CryptoPunks have a different combination of accessories.
