Expert review

I’ve had the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi for seven years now, and it’s one of the main cards I use. I recommend it to anyone who has excellent credit, especially if you shop a lot at Costco.

What makes this such a valuable card is the rewards aren’t focused just on Costco purchases. In fact, Costco isn’t even the highest rewards category offered by the card. While Costco purchases earn 2% cashback, travel and restaurant purchases earn 3%.

Also, you earn 4% on gas on up to $7,000 a year (then 1%), and that’s at any gas station, not just at Costco. So if you do your grocery shopping at Costco, this card offers you a high rewards rate on groceries at Costco, gas, dining out, and travel, which is an impressive selection of typical spending categories.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi reviews and complaints

Some customers warn that Citi will close your account if you cancel your Costco membership.

Happy customers say the card offers great cash back. Unhappy users say Citi customer support is unhelpful, and Costco staff may not be able to help you with your credit card.

Even though Citi has been in business for more than 200 years, it was never accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB). As of October 2020, more than 200 customer complaints on the BBB site give the bank a score of 1 out of 5. Because Citi failed to resolve customer complaints on the site, BBB has rated the bank with the lowest F rating.

Citi is rated slightly higher at 1.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot where customers mostly complain about poor customer service.

I signed up for the Costco Anywhere Visa credit card a few years ago when I became a Costco member. Not only do I get great rewards on my Costco merchandise and gas purchases, but I receive rewards on other day-to-day and travel purchases as well. I use my Costco Anywhere Visa credit card in lieu of keeping up with my membership card, which is another small perk for me.

The rewards are great, such as 4% back on gas purchases (capped at $7,000, then decreases to 1% cash back), but they’re only issued once per year in February — and the rewards are forfeited if you cancel your Costco membership before then. If you stay a member long enough to get the rewards, they can be redeemed for merchandise purchases or cash.

I got the card. Now what?

  • Make payments on time.

You can register for an online account on the Citi website. It will let you check your account balance, pay your bill electronically and set up automatic payments.

  • Avoid interest.

The card comes with a 15.24% variable APR for purchases and balance transfers. That’s around the average credit card APR. Still, consider paying off your balances in full each month to avoid accruing interest.

  • Avoid fees.

You’ll incur fees for balance transfers and cash advances. For each late or returned payment, you’ll pay a fee of $40.

  • Contact customer service.

If you have questions about your card, you can log in to your Citi account and chat with a representative. You can also call the number on the back of your card to reach the Citi Cards general support line.

How do I redeem rewards from the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi?

After you receive your credit card reward certificate, simply use it when you’re paying for your Costco purchases. If you don’t use its entire balance, you’ll get the remaining amount in cash while you’re checking out.

Which credit cards does Costco accept?

Bottom line

If you’re in the market for a strong cashback card, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi could be a great choice. It offers impressive rewards on gas, dining and travel, and you’ll earn solid cash back on Costco purchases.

If you don’t spend much in the card’s elevated-rewards categories, you may earn more rewards with another cashback card.

Frequently asked questions

If I receive a penalty APR, when will it expire?

No. If you don’t redeem your entire certificate, you’ll receive the remaining balance in cash at checkout.

If I cancel my Costco membership, can I still redeem my reward certificate?
