Expert review

Cigna offers disability coverage for both the short and long term, but you can only buy it if it’s offered through your employer. It’s a large and financially sound company, though it’s disability department has mostly negative reviews online.

If you want to look into buying an individual disability plan instead, you can compare other disability insurance providers.

Built-in benefits and policy riders

  • Family survivor benefit. This benefit pays out three months’ worth of your benefits to your surviving spouse or family member if you pass away while receiving disability income.
  • Re-employment solutions. If eligible, this benefit offers assistance to help you develop modified or alternative work options to help rebuild your career after a disability.
  • Recurrent disability feature. Cigna’s disability plans allow you to avoid a second elimination period if you return to work and reinjure yourself from the same original disability. It treats the second claim as a continuation of the first.
  • Rehabilitation services. Cigna will continue to pay your disability while you’re in rehabilitation, but could void your payments if you refuse to participate in a rehab program.
  • Waiver of premium. Cigna will waive your premium payments if you become disabled and can’t work.

  • Residual disability rider. This optional rider will pay out part of your disability benefit if you return to work, but are earning less than you were before you became disabled.
  • Cost of living adjustment (COLA). This add-on automatically increases your benefit amount to reflect increases in everyday expenses.

Pros and cons of Cigna disability insurance

  • Financially strong company. A company with a long history, Cigna is a Fortune 500 company with a global reach and very strong financial ratings from the top insurance rating agencies, such as AM Best and Moody’s.
  • Offered through employers. Cigna’s disability products are only offered through certain employers, which can make it cheaper and easier to start coverage and make payments, as opposed to covering yourself independently. You also won’t have to take a medical exam to get approved.
  • Value-added programs. Cigna offers health and vocational coaches to help you get back to work sooner, in addition to programs such as financial health consultations and health advocacy services.

  • Lack of information online. Cigna’s website doesn’t offer much information online, so you’ll likely have to contact the company or speak with your employer’s Cigna rep to get more information.
  • No individual policies. Cigna doesn’t offer any individual disability policies, so if you want something other than what your employer offers you, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
  • No small businesses. Cigna only offers its disability products to groups over 50, so if you have fewer than 50 employees on your group plan you won’t be eligible.
