The holiday season is among the biggest shopping sprees of the year. But when you’re scrambling chaotically for last-minute gifts in December, it can put the kibosh on the magic of Christmas.

Clothing for the whole family

July marks the in-between season for clothing retailers, with summer clothes rolling out of stores and fall clothes making their way in. This means a chance to snag deals on both summer and fall tops, bottoms and accessories for the whole family.

Retailers like JCPenney, Target and Old Navy are known for extending their Fourth of July sales throughout the entire month, so be on the lookout for closeout prices as summer sales draw to a close.

Back-to-school supplies

Retailers are gear up for back to school in July with prices not yet hiked to their highest, given most people are still pretending the start of the school year is far, far away. In addition to clothes, look for deep discounts on school supplies as early as the end of June.

In the past, JCPenney ran discounts on school uniforms by as much as 60%, while Target advertised 10% off backpacks and Walmart knocked more than $60 off the price of Texas Instruments graphing calculators.

Last July, Office Depot ran a one-day, pre–Fourth of July sale on which shoppers saved $10 off orders of $50 or more — plus free shipping. Deeper discounts followed as the month progressed, offering more than 30% off paper shredders, 40% off leather desk chairs and up to 40% off select laptops and desktop computers.

School supplies deals and sales

Believe it or not, some retailers go all out for Christmas in July, making way for midsummer trees, tinsel and decorations. Home Depot is known for such fun, mainly focused on Christmas trees and outdoor yard decorations like blow-up characters, lights and wreaths.

Walmart marked down Christmas trees last July too. We’ve also seen the retail giant drop its minimum to qualify for free shipping online from $50 down to $35 just for this event.

July is a slow retail month for everyone, including jewelers. If you’re planning to pop the question or need an elegant holiday gift on the cheap, check out deals on rings, necklaces and more.

Macy’s holds one of its biggest jewelry sales in July, offering savings of more than $300 on select diamond rings and freshwater pearl necklaces, as well as marking down gold bangles marked from $750 to $159. In 2016, it slashed most boxed-jewelry prices by 50%.


Although bedding doesn’t have much to do with Christmas — unless you count hosting holiday family overnight — you’ll see discounts on mattresses for Fourth of July that often last throughout the month.

Look to popular online mattress retailers like Purple, Casper, Leesa and Eight Sleep for special deals all of July, such as free pillows and up to $200 off your total purchase.

Why do retailers offer a sale in July?

Christmas in July is a cultural phenomenon that’s a response to lower sales retailers see in July. Marketers figured out that encouraging consumers to think about Christmas in the dog days of summer actually increased sales.

But Christmas in July sales can be good for you too, because you can get many of the same goods available over the holidays a lower prices in the summer.

Another reason for Christmas in July is one that’s more fun: Many countries in the Southern Hemisphere — like Australia, Bolivia, Papua New Guinea and South Africa — experience summer weather when us Americans are sitting down at the Christmas table. These countries often set aside special celebrations in July to experience a cool, cozy Christmas as we do in the Northern Hemisphere. That’s in addition to celebrating the official holiday on December 25, lucky ducks.
