When it comes to travel insurance, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card often comes out on top. In addition to the standard travel accident insurance or lost luggage reimbursement that similar cards offer, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers primary car rental collision damage waiver, baggage delay reimbursement, emergency evacuation and transportation, trip delay reimbursement and more.

However, you have to be eligible and meet certain criteria to activate the travel insurance.

Trip cancelation/interruption insurance

Who is eligibleThe cardholder and their immediate family members are covered.
What is included
  • Injury, death or sickness
  • Severe weather that prevents the start or continuation of your trip
  • Terrorist attack or hijacking
  • Jury duty or a court subpoena that cannot be postponed or waived
  • Financial insolvency of the tour operator that organized the trip
What isn’t included
  • Cancelation or changes by the tour operator unless the cancellation is due to severe weather or an organized strike affecting public transportation
  • Change in plans or financial circumstances of the covered person
  • A pre-existing condition or traveling against the advice of a physician
  • A declared or undeclared war
  • Trips longer than 60 days
Coverage amountsChase will reimburse all covered persons for the non-refundable amount you paid up to $10,000 with a maximum limit of $20,000 per occurrence. The maximum benefit you can claim within a 12-month period is $40,000.
When to fileIf you cancel your trip due to health issues, you must notify the travel agent within 48 hours of receiving advice from a physician that traveling isn’t recommended for you.

File a written claim within 20 days after the occurrence. You can also call 888-675-1461 for information or to file a claim. Chase will send you a claim form. Submit the completed claim form with supporting documentation within 90 days from the date of occurrence.

Trip delay reimbursement

Who is eligibleThe cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 22 years of age are eligible for the reimbursement.
What is includedWhenever your trip is delayed for more than 12 hours and requires an overnight sleep, Chase will reimburse you for essential expenses, such as meals, lodging, toiletries, medication and other items for personal use.
What isn’t included
  • Delay that was made public or known to you before departure for the covered trip
  • Prepaid expenses
Coverage amountsYou are covered up to $500 for each purchased ticket. The coverage applies to one covered hazard per trip.
When to fileCall the benefits administrator within 60 days following the date of the delay. You will then receive a claim form. Submit the completed form with any required documents within 100 days of the date of the delay.

Baggage delay insurance

Who is eligibleThe main cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner and immediate family members are covered with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® baggage delay insurance.
What is includedWhenever your baggage is delayed for more than six hours on a common carrier covered trip, you can get reimbursement for the purchase of essential items, such as clothing, toiletries and a cell phone charging cable.
What isn’t includedItems that aren’t covered with the insurance are:

  • Contact lenses, eyeglasses and hearing aids
  • Tickets, documents, money, securities, checks, traveler’s checks and valuable papers
  • Jewelry and watches
  • Business samples
  • Cameras, video recorders, mobile phones and other electronic equipment and their accessories
Coverage amountsYou are covered for $100 per day for up to five days.
When to fileYou must file a written claim within 20 days after the occurrence. The benefits administrator will send you a claim form. Submit the completed claim form and other documentation, if required, within 90 days from the date of occurrence.

Lost luggage reimbursement

Who is eligibleThe main cardholder and immediate family members.
What is includedYour checked baggage, carry-on baggage and personal property within the baggage on a common carrier covered trip.
What isn’t includedDocuments or valuable papers, money, securities, tickets, checks, traveler’s checks or furs aren’t covered with the insurance.
Coverage amountsYou get up to $3,000 coverage per insured person per covered trip. This includes coverage for jewelry, watches and electronics which cannot exceed $500 within the maximum limit of the coverage of $3,000.
When to fileReport the loss or damage to the common carrier immediately after exiting the carrier. To receive any reimbursement from Chase, you must provide proof that you submitted a report to the carrier.

File a written claim within 20 days after the occurrence and the benefits administrator will send you a claim form. Submit a completed claim form and supporting documents within 90 days from the date of occurrence.

Auto rental collision damage waiver

Who is eligibleThe main cardholder and authorized persons are eligible for the auto rental collision damage waiver. But you have to activate it first.

How to activate the auto rental collision damage waiver.

  1. Use your Chase Sapphire Reserve® card to pay for the full car rental.
  2. Decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver (CDW) if offered.
  3. If the rental company insists that you purchase CDW, call the Chase benefits administrator at 888-675-1461 for help.
What is includedYour rental car is covered for 31 consecutive days. The coverage includes:

  • Physical damage or theft
  • Towing charges to take the vehicle to the nearest repair facility
  • Charges incurred by the rental car company while the damaged vehicle is being repaired
What isn’t includedVehicles not covered by the insurance are:

  • Antique automobiles
  • Vans for more than eight people
  • Vehicles with an open cargo bed
  • Trucks
  • Motorcycles, mopeds and motorbikes
  • Limousines and recreational vehicles

Other instances where you aren’t covered include:

  • If you sign a CDW with the car rental company
  • Injury inside or outside the vehicle
  • Confiscation by authorities
  • Violation of the auto rental agreement
  • Loss or theft of personal belongings
Coverage amountsThe auto rental coverage provides reimbursement of up to $75,000. This is primary coverage, which means you don’t have to file a claim with other insurance agencies before you can claim your benefits.
When to fileCall the benefits administrator right away to report theft or damage. The administrator will answer any questions you may have and send you a claim form. You can file a claim online at www.eclaimsline.com.

You must report the incident within 60 days of the occurrence. Then you must postmark your completed claim form within 100 days of the date of the accident. Also, you must send a copy of your receipt or monthly billing statement showing that the entire vehicle rental was charged to your Chase Sapphire Reserve® card.

Travel accident insurance

Who is eligibleThe cardholder and their immediate family, even if the cardholder isn’t traveling with them.
What is includedThe travel accident insurance benefit comes in two forms:

  • Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance. Covers the loss when entering, exiting, or riding as a passenger on a common carrier. This means the coverage doesn’t apply while you’re at the hotel or the beach.
  • 24 Hour Travel Accident Insurance. Covers loss starting from the departure date printed on your ticket and ends on the return date printed on the ticket. You are covered for 30 consecutive days, 24 hours a day.

Note: You can only claim benefits from one insurance for the same accident.

What isn’t included
  • Emotional trauma, mental or physical illness, disease, pregnancy, childbirth or miscarriage, bacterial or viral infection
  • The act or attempt of a felony
  • Parachute jumping, races or any sporting activity for which salary or prize money is earned
  • A declared or undeclared war
  • Trips on a scheduled aircraft that are not registered or certified by the government or governmental authority
Coverage amounts
  • Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance. Loss of life benefit is $1,000,000.
  • 24 Hour Travel Accident Insurance. Benefit amount for loss of life is $100,000.
When to fileYou must file a written claim within 20 days after the accident. After that, the benefit administrator will send you a claim form. Submit a completed claim form with supporting documentation within 90 days from the date of the accident.

Emergency medical and dental benefit

Who is eligibleThe cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 18 years old. If your children are full-time students, they are covered under 25 years of age.
What is included
  • Services of a qualified physician, surgeon, nurse, dentist or osteopath
  • Hospital and operating room charges
  • Charges for anesthetics, x-ray exams and lab tests
  • Ambulance services
  • Drugs, medicines, and therapeutic services and supplies

This only applies to a treatment you receive during your covered trip from the recommendation of an attending physician. The trip duration must be between five and 60 days and you must be 100 miles or more from home for the insurance to apply.

What isn’t included
  • Non-emergency services, supplies or charges
  • Care provided by anyone other than hospital professionals and physicians or dentists
  • Experimental care
  • Care in countries that are determined to be unsafe for travel by the US government
  • Care not medically necessary as determined by the benefit administrator
Coverage amounts
  • $2,500 subject to a $50 deductible
  • $75 per day for hotel convalescence, up to five days
When to fileYou must immediately call the benefits administrator. They will send you a claim form, which you must submit 180 days from the date of occurrence.

Emergency evacuation and transportation

Who is eligibleThe cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 18 years old are eligible. If the children are full-time students, they are covered if they are under 25 years of age.
What is included
  • Transportation, medical services and medical supplies necessary for your evacuation
  • Transportation, such as air ambulances, land ambulances and private motor vehicles
What isn’t included
  • Travel to obtain medical treatment
  • Non-emergency services, supplies or charges
  • Care which is experimental
Coverage amountsYou are covered up to $100,000.
When to fileContact the benefits administrator immediately for preapproval and to receive a claim form.
After you receive the form, submit it along with any required documents within 180 days of the date of the occurrence.

How does Chase Sapphire Reserve® travel insurance work?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® travel insurance is a complimentary feature, meaning you don’t have to pay extra for it. To use this feature, you must purchase your travel tickets with Sapphire Reserve. Your travel insurance is then immediately activated.

Can I use Chase points to pay for my trip and still get travel insurance?

Yes. Paying your common carrier with Chase points makes you eligible for the travel insurance and coverage.

If the covered person dies, who gets the travel accident insurance benefit?

In such an unfortunate event, the benefit money goes to the designated beneficiary. If the covered person didn’t designate a beneficiary, the benefit will go in this order:

  • Spouse or domestic partner
  • Child(ren)
  • Parents
  • Brothers and sisters
  • Your estate
