Purchase protection is a useful perk that can give you coverage to repair or replace lost, stolen or damaged items you bought with your Chase card. All Chase credit cards provide protection for 120 days after you make the purchase. But the coverage amount depends on the card.

The card’s purchase protection covers the main cardholder and the receiver of a gift, which the main cardholder bought with their Chase credit card. Eligible purchases made with your Chase card’s points are also covered under this perk.

How to use Chase purchase protection

Using Chase purchase protection is simple. All you have to do is:

  1. Purchase an eligible item with your Chase credit card.
  2. Notify your benefit administrator within 90 days if something happens to your item, such as theft, involuntary loss or damage.
  3. Wait for the benefit administrator to send you a claim form.
  4. Submit the completed claim form and any additional documents within 120 days of the occurrence.
  5. Get reimbursed for stolen or lost items, or coverage to repair damaged items.

How Chase purchase protection works

Suppose you use your Chase credit card to buy a new laptop that costs $2,000. A month later, you accidentally step on the cable and pull your laptop off the table. Now you have a cracked screen that may cost around $1,000 to repair and replace.

To say it’s expensive and frustrating is an understatement. However, if you bought your laptop with one of Chase’s cards that has a $10,000 coverage per claim, all you have to do is file the claim and Chase will reimburse you for the cost of repairs or replacement.

Does Chase purchase protection cover all purchased items?

No. The following items aren’t covered with Chase purchase protection:

  • Animals and plants
  • Antiques and collectible items
  • Boats, aircraft, automobiles and any other motorized vehicles and their equipment, such as trailers and other towable items
  • Computer software
