A blockchain-based monster RPG with plans to release on major consoles.
Chainmonsters is a play-to-earn, massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set to officially launch sometime later this year. It's similar to the core Pokémon games. There are also plans to release the game on PC, mobile devices, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch with cross-platform play.
Highlights
- MMORPG
- No open beta yet
- Crypto wallet not required
- Free to play
- Pokémon-inspired
- 161 monster types
- Cross-platform
- Console releases in late 2022
What is Chainmonsters?
Chainmonsters is basically an open-world Pokémon game built on blockchain tech, and it'll be completely free to sign up and play. It's an expansive 3D environment, open-world style with a day and night cycle. The game was originally being built on the Ethereum blockchain but has recently switched to Dapper Labs's blockchain Flow.
The gameplay revolves around the Chainmons — referencing block and monster — that you can catch, train, breed, battle, buy and sell. To date, there are 161 NFT creatures with plans to eventually create more.

The story is set in the fictional world of Ancora, a world divided into eight islands, each with its own style, twists and mechanics. You join the story as a new recruit for "N-Corp" and are tasked with researching and identifying the Chainmons living alongside humans in Ancora — basically the plot of any core Pokémon game.
There's no investment required to play Chainmonsters, and you don't even need a crypto wallet if you just want to play for fun.
Chainmonsters has a solid fan base, with a little over 19,000 members on its Discord channel. That member count isn't the highest we've seen, but it's not the lowest either. For reference, the very popular crypto game Axie Infinity has over 700,000 Discord members.
Playing Chainmonsters
Chainmonsters is still in closed beta, at the time of writing. The open beta is set to release at some point in 2022. There is conflicting information on when it's supposed to release. The Chainmonsters FAQ states it was meant to launch in February 2022, but to play, you still need a closed beta pass at the time of writing.
When the game officially launches and you're interested in earning opportunities, you'll need a Blocto wallet to link to your Chainmonsters account. If you're not interested in play-to-earn, then you just need the Chainmonsters account.
Chainmonsters can be played through Steam or on iOS and Android devices. In October 2021, Steam banned crypto and NFT games on their platform. However, we checked Steam and it's still listed — for now.

After you've signed up, you'll use your character to roam around the various islands of Ancora, completing challenges, encountering Chainmons and interacting with the non-player characters (NPCs) that inhabit the world. And it's also an MMORPG, so you'll run into other players you can challenge.
To engage with monsters in the world, walk up to them and start the turn-based battle. Battling with Chainmons is very similar to Pokémon, and we even saw attacks named Water Gun and Vine Whip — original.
You can play Chainmonsters solo or group up with other players to complete group quests, dungeons and raids.

One aspect that helps separate Chainmonsters from the competition is its use of cross-platform play. This allows you to continue your progress from one console or PC to another seamlessly. The cross-platform gameplay also enables friend groups across different platforms to group up and play together, which has traditionally been a rare function within games (crypto or otherwise).
Eventually, Chainmonsters will be available to play on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch in late 2022. This is a major plus if it actually ends up happening.
What is the Chainmonsters token?
Chainmonsters is built on the Flow blockchain and uses the cryptocurrency Flow USD (FUSD), a USD-backed stablecoin.
How to buy Chainmonsters token
Unfortunately, at this time no major exchanges in the US offer this coin. However, you may be able to purchase it with another cryptocurrency, just be sure you're following all legal restrictions and requirements.
Consider buying a different cryptocurrency after comparing popular exchanges.
How does play-to-earn work with Chainmonsters?
If you link your Blotco wallet to your Chainmonster's account, you can access the play-to-earn opportunities — which, at the time of writing, is just selling in-game assets through the peer-to-peer Chainmonsters Marketplace.
Again, you don't have to connect a wallet to play, but you'll need one to buy and sell on the Marketplace. Your in-game progression is tracked by the email used to sign up for Chainmonsters, and rewards and currency from sales are deposited to your Blocto wallet.
What are the Chainmonsters NFTs?
Nonfungible tokens (NFTs) are the driving force behind Chainmonsters and its play-to-earn mechanics. NFTs will encapsulate almost every in-game item, from the cosmetics of the character and the Chainmons to the pebbles on the beach you need to collect to complete a quest.
You can exchange all these in-game items on the Chainmonsters Marketplace.
There are 161 unique types of Chainmons. Each is a unique NFT with unique stats, traits and mutations that define its strength for the battle mode. Even if you catch two of the same type of Chainmon, they will have different stats thanks to the RNG (random number generator) mechanic.
There are also three rarities for Chainmons: Normal, Shadow and Crystal, with only 600 Crystal Chainmons in the entire game. There are also nine "elements," with strengths and weaknesses, similar to Pokémon.
Eventually, there will be breeding mechanics as well. Bred Chainmons inherit some traits and stats from each parent while also mutating a set of new traits.
How to get NFTs on Chainmonsters
You can purchase the Chainmonsters game items through the Shop or Marketplace. To access the Chainmonsters Shop or peer-to-peer Marketplace, you need an account and a Blocto wallet.
Getting to either market is done by simply selecting the tab on the Chainmonsters navigation menu on the home site.
In the Shop, you can purchase Diamonds, which are used to purchase the Premium Season Pass and future NFT bundles.
In the Marketplace, you'll see Overview, All Offers and Sale History. Select All Offers to view the items currently for sale. Select the item you want to purchase and confirm the transaction with your Blocto wallet.

How to sell NFTs from Chainmonsters
Follow these steps to sell your Chainmonsters NFTs on the peer-to-peer Marketplace:
- Select the Marketplace tab on the Chainmonsters site.
- Log in to your Chainmonsters account and connect your Blocto wallet.
- Select Inventory, then choose the NFT you want to sell.
- Select Sell Now and enter the price, then select Sell.
If you want to change the price of the item you just listed for sale or cancel the sale, view the item in your Inventory again, select it, then select Update price or Remove from Sale. All sales on the Marketplace are fixed-price.
There is a 5% Marketplace fee for all sales. However, there is no listing fee.

About the Chainmonsters developers
Chainmonsters is being developed by B-Side Games, a German studio founded in 2017. While not much information was available about the developer on the official Chainmonsters site, we were able to track down more information about B-Side from third-party sites, such as LinkedIn.
Chainmonsters originally launched on the Ethereum blockchain but moved over to the Flow blockchain. It's been in development since 2017 and has seen a major overhaul of its graphics since launching its Kickstarter campaign on October 20, 2020.
Chainmonsters roadmap
One of the defining features of Chainmonsters since its inception is that it operates as a cross-platform game. The developers state they want to connect players across platforms and enable players to continue their character development between multiple devices.
Chainmonsters is available on Android and iOS at this time for mobile play (with closed beta access), and is expected to launch on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch in late 2022.
The official open beta for Chainmonsters was meant to be released in February 2022 but, to date, hasn't come to fruition.
Bottom line
Technically, you don't have to know much of anything about cryptocurrency or NFTs to play Chainmonsters. And with its anticipated major console releases no crypto wallet required, it could ease traditional gamers into the space as well.
Overall, the game has a lot of potential; eventual cross-platform play, relaxing music, decent graphics, NPC side quests, battling, breeding, playing with friends and more. For many RPG and Pokémon fans, it checks all the boxes required for a solid MMORPG experience — but until it's fully released, we won't know for sure.
