Didn’t get to see Hamilton onstage? No worries, Disney has your back. The acclaimed and beloved musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is getting the movie treatment. A filmed version of the stage production will become available worldwide beginning July 3 on Disney+, 15 months earlier than it was initially scheduled.
The production stars Miranda in the titular role of US Treasury Secretary and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, along with the original Broadway cast. The musical was inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Chernow. It chronicles Hamilton’s ascent out of poverty and to power against the backdrop of the American War of Independence. The narrative is presented in the form of original, catchy hip-hop and R’n’B songs.
Yes. Hamilton received numerous accolades since it premiered back Off-Broadway in 2015, including 11 Tony Awards and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The musical itself has made its way across America and was set to come to Hamburg and Sydney. So for now, this stage recording will be the only way many will be able to see it making for an exciting watch.
As we mentioned earlier, Hamilton will drop on streaming service Disney+ on 3 July 2020. Disney+ once came with a free trial, but by the time Hamilton comes out that will no longer be the case and you’ll have to sign up directly. You can check out the shows and movies on Disney+ here.
