History of the Carabao Cup

The 2020/21 Carabao Cup is the 61st season of what is traditionally known as the EFL Cup or the League Cup. Manchester City are the three-time defending champions and are yet again among the favourites to take out the silverware.

Round three is when the Premier League clubs enter the competition. It is also when the Carabao Cup traditionally starts to dish up some surprise results.

Last season, heavyweight EPL clubs Manchester United and Tottenham went to penalties, against League One side Rochdale and League two side Colchester respectively. Things went from bad to worse for Tottenham, who lost on penalties and were knocked out of the tournament.

Carabao Cup competition format

All clubs from the EFL and EPL feature in the competition. Sides compete in a straight knockout format across every round this season. Usually the semi-finals use the home-and-away format, but not in 2020/21.

The final is set to be played at London’s Wembley Stadium on 28 February 2021, where the winner qualifies for the following season’s Europa League.
