USAA is a longstanding company that’s been around since 1922. But although it’s one of the largest auto insurers in the United States, it’s only open to military members and their families. While Esurance offers coverage to all drivers.

Both companies earn high marks from the Better Business Bureau. However, USAA wins hands-down in claims satisfaction. It nabs a stellar five-out-of-five grade from J.D. Power, while Esurance earns only three out of five. Both insurers offer a wealth of discounts: good-student, defensive-driver, good-driver, multi-car and more.

USAA stands out as our top winner for top-rated customer service and accident forgiveness. However, if you don’t qualify for USAA, Esurance is still a solid option with a long list of discounts and wide coverage eligibility.

Bottom line

USAA is our top pick for its customer service ratings, but if you’re neither a member of the military or in the family of someone who is, you won’t be eligible to join USAA. If that’s the case, Esurance may be the default winner in this two-company contest. Keep in mind, however, that it operates only in 40 US states, while USAA operates in all 50.

If neither of these companies fit your needs, compare your car insurance companies to find the best fit for you.
