How to compare insurance for the Land Rover Range Rover Velar

When comparing your insurance options for your Range Rover Velar, consider these factors:

  • Price. This luxury SUV generally comes with a higher insurance price tag than other Range Rovers, but you can still find ways to save.
  • Deductible. One way to lower your car insurance premium is to take a higher deductible. But for a newer luxury SUV like the Velar, the cost of parts and repairs can quickly add up, so a lower deductible could save you more in the long run.
  • Minimum coverage. At the very least, you’ll need to make sure your insurance quotes include the minimum coverage requirements for your state. Land Rover owners may want to add additional coverage that goes beyond the state minimum to avoid getting stuck with a hefty out-of-pocket cost down the road.
  • Manufacturer offers or other discounts. Since the Velar comes standard with cutting-edge safety features like emergency brake assist and electronic traction control, you could snap up a hefty discount with many insurance providers.
  • Warranty. All Land Rover vehicles that are still under warranty are automatically covered by Land Rover’s complimentary roadside assistance, trip interruption and emergency towing services.

What factors affect car insurance for the Land Rover Range Rover Velar?

Luxury SUVs like Range Rover Velars can be more expensive to insure than some other makes and models, especially if yours has an upgraded trim package.

In general, Land Rovers are known for being unreliable and difficult to repair. However, for newer models like the Velar, these concerns may not affect your premium as much as for older models. And the Velar offers several included and optional safety features that could help you qualify for safety discounts.

Reliability and safety ratings for the Land Rover Range Rover Velar

Like other Land Rovers, the Velar doesn’t get the best reliability ratings. JD Power gave this model a 2.5 out of 5 for reliability, which is well below average.

Since this is a brand new model, there isn’t a ton of information out there just yet about how the Velar stacks up against other Land Rovers when it comes to reliability.

As for safety, official crash test scores haven’t been released as of July 2018, but the Velar does have a long list of safety features to push its safety rating up even without official test results.

There are currently two recalls out on certain 2018 Range Rover Velars, including:

  • Fuel system recall. For vehicles equipped with a 2.0L gasoline engine, fuel rail end caps may leak, which could cause fuel or fuel vapor to leak into the engine. This may pose a risk of fire.
  • Defrosting system recall. The air inlet doors in the ventilation system of some 2018 Velars could come loose. This would prevent the defrosting system from clearing fog or condensation from the windshield or windows, which could cause visibility issues.

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar series maintenance

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar’s fuel economy is about what you’d expect for a luxury SUV, with an average of 26 mpg for city driving and 30 mpg on the highway.

Similarly, as a luxury SUV, expect to pay a little more for regular maintenance:

  • An oil change for your Velar could cost you around $130.
  • The average cost of brake pad replacement for a Velar is around $250 per axle.

Range Rover Velar facts
