Bottom line

Farmers has the slight edge on states covered. It offers insurance in all 50 US states, while Esurance only covers 43 states. Both insurers earn similar scores for customer satisfaction. Esurance gets an “A+” from the Better Business Bureau, and Farmers gets an “A-.” Unfortunately, you may be less than impressed with either company’s claims process. Both received a three-out-of-five score from J.D. Power.

Perhaps more impressive is the discounts you may qualify for. Both insurers offer good-student and good-driver discounts. Farmers, in particular, offers a few innovative promotions like distant-student and youthful-driver discounts. Esurance and Farmers have generous vehicle promotions, such as anti-theft, anti-lock and passive-restraint discounts.
