Esurance vs. American Family: Discounts, quotes, and comparison

Esurance vs. American Family

Trying to decide between Esurance and American Family? It’s time to compare them and find the right insurer for you.

Many consumers may not know that American Family is one of the largest auto insurers in the United States. The company has been around for 90 years, and it offers home, life and business insurance.

Esurance is a new player in the insurance market, founded in 1999. Since its inception, it’s gained a lot of traction through its accessible online insurance. Today, it’s owned by Allstate.

At this time, Esurance is testing pay-by-mile insurance in Oregon. It’s a good bet that the company will be rolling out the policy to other states soon.

Bottom line

If you’re looking for a battle-tested insurer, you can rest easy knowing that American Family qualifies. Though Esurance is a newer company, it’s backed by the insurance behemoth Allstate.

Before settling on either insurer, check to make sure it covers your state. Esurance covers 40 states, and American Family covers only 19 states.

Customer satisfaction scores show a relatively muddy picture. Esurance gets an A+ from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but it scores only three out of five from J.D. Power in claims satisfaction. Meanwhile, American Family gets a B+ from the BBB and four out of five from J.D. Power in claims satisfaction.
