But if you’re interested in buying a policy from one of the top four insurers, it can be hard to figure out which company has the most to offer you. Who has the cheapest car insurance?

According to Consumer Reports, price is a driver’s biggest motivation to switch insurance carriers. And in that area, Geico is the winner for cheapest rates for most drivers.

While Geico is almost always the cheapest overall, that doesn’t necessarily hold true for every region — which is why it can be important to shop around before committing to one insurance company.

Who has the best tech?

All of the carriers have mobile apps that allow you to have a digital copy of your proof of insurance, get roadside assistance and file claims, but Geico stands above the rest with a long list of digital and high-tech features.

Geico

  • Voice assistance. In addition to working with Alexa and Google Assistant, Geico has their own virtual assistant named Kate, who can answer questions about your insurance coverage.
  • Rideshare. Geico has teamed up with Lyft to get you a ride when you need one through the Geico mobile app.
  • Maintenance alerts. Geico’s Vehicle Car allows you to view your service history, get maintenance alerts, see any recalls on your vehicles when they’re issued and even be alerted to when your registration is due.
  • Parking locator. Using the mobile app, you can find the closest parking, book a spot ahead of time and mark where you’ve parked so you won’t have to search for your car.
  • Gas locator. You can plan where to stop for gas on your route or see real-time gas prices closest to your location.
  • Photos for claims. Take photos of minor damage with your phone and upload them with your claim on the mobile app.
  • Local attractions. The destinations feature lets you browse local attractions.
  • Chat with support. Use the in-app chat client to contact support.

Allstate

  • Voice assistance. Allstate works with Alexa to find your local agent and access your billing details.
  • Data gathering. Allstate’s Drivewise is a telematics device you attach to your car that gives you feedback on how you drive and rewards safe driving with discounts on your premiums.
  • Parking locator. As part of your mobile app, this feature reminds you where you’ve parked and can tell you when your parking meter is almost empty.
  • Gas price locator. You can search the map to find the lowest gas prices in your area through the Allstate app.
  • Photos for claims. With QuickFoto Claim on the mobile app, you can take photos with your phone and upload them with your claim.

State Farm

  • Data gathering. State Farm’s Drive Safe & Save app scores your driving and tracks your trips so you can save on your premium.
  • Driver’s education. The Driver Feedback Instructor Edition app helps driver’s ed teachers give feedback on student drivers, with a special feature to allow parents to see their teens’ progress.

Progressive

  • Voice assistance. Progressive works with Google Home to help you find a local agent, access your billing details, provide DIY tips on home improvements and ways to save money on car care.
  • Data gathering. Using your app or plug-in device, the Snapshot program allows you to track your driving habits and get discounts for driving safely.
  • Photos for claims. Progressive’s Photo Estimate program doesn’t let you automatically upload your photos with your claims. But once you’ve filed a claim, you can get an invitation to upload your photos and videos, if your claim is deemed eligible.

Who offers the most coverage options?

If coverage options are important to you, Allstate definitely offers the largest set of choices. But each carrier brings a slightly different spin to the choices on offer, some of which may be more important to you than others. Besides the standard liability, collision, comprehensive and medical payments coverage, you’ll find more coverage from these top companies:

Allstate

  • Accident forgiveness. Ensures your insurance premiums don’t go up after your first at-fault accident. This coverage comes standard with Allstate policies.
  • Classic car coverage. Antique and other classic cars get specialized coverage, such as value-based reimbursements.
  • Personal injury protection. Offers coverage related to injuries you sustained in a covered accident
  • Personal umbrella policy. Covers damage and injury of third parties above and beyond your car’s standard liability limits.
  • Rental reimbursement coverage. Car rental and other transportation expenses are covered for when your car is in the shop.
  • Rideshare insurance. Provides extended coverage for when you’re using your car as a Lyft, Uber or other rideshare driver, but you don’t have a customer in the car.
  • Roadside assistance. Roadside services like tire changes, jump-starts and locking your keys in your car are all covered.
  • Sound system insurance. Helps to replace stolen or damaged sound system equipment.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Provides coverage when the third party at fault doesn’t have insurance or has inadequate coverage.

Who has the best customer ratings?

J.D. Power’s latest insurance study showed that customer satisfaction for auto insurers improved overall in 2019, up to a record high 831 out of 1000. Still, the big four insurers all scored mid-range, with a three-star customer satisfaction score from J.D. Power. However, Allstate made it to the top of regional rankings and had the highest customer rankings in Florida.

  • Standard discounts. The insurer claims that it saves drivers more than $500 a year when they switch to Geico.
  • Innovative mobile app. You can view your policy, submit a claim or even find the cheapest gas in your area.
  • Easy repair process. You are assigned a claims adjuster to explain the repair process and answer your questions.
  • Low online customer service reviews. Geico’s savings may come at the cost of quality customer service staff.
  • Claims typically handled online. If you prefer face-to-face service for claims, Geico may not be for you.
Progressive
  • Top-rated insurer. With more than 80 years of experience, Progressive is a big name in the industry and one of the most popular.
  • Online signup and claim reporting. You can buy your policy online and make a claim from a browser or on the app.
  • Multiple discounts available. Take advantage of one of the largest lists of discounts available with no limit to how many discounts you can get.
  • Transparent quotes. Use the comparison tool to make sure you get the best rate, even if it’s from a competitor.
  • Some customer complaints. This insurer has slightly more customer complaints than the industry average and a B- rating with over 2,000 complaints on BBB, though all but 4 have been answered or resolved.
  • Six-month policies only. If you prefer to have your rate locked in for a 12-month policy, you may be disappointed with Progressive’s standard 6-month terms.
State Farm
  • Biggest car insurance company. State Farm is the top choice in the US, with agents in any ZIP code.
  • High customer satisfaction. Out of the big four insurers, State Farm is tied with Geico with the highest rated Consumer Reports reader score.
  • High-risk auto insurance. State Farm is able to insure drivers who have a less-than-perfect driving record.
  • Higher prices than its competition. J.D. Power reports that State Farm tends to be more expensive than other options.
  • Inconsistent service. Since State Farm’s products are sold through a massive network of agents, your experience may vary.
  • Expect hard upselling. Agents are trained to push upgrades and add-ons.

Bottom line

The largest four auto insurers have the stability to offer a wide array of policies and options so you can tailor a policy to your needs.

But with so many insurers on the market, it’s worth comparing car insurance from these insurers and smaller companies who may be a better fit or offer better prices in your region.
