Capital One confirms auto rental collision damage waivers (CDWs) with the majority — but not all — of its cards.
All of Capital One’s Visa cards offer car rental insurance, but only three of the provider’s Mastercard products have the benefit listed on their application pages.
You may receive car rental insurance through Capital One Mastercards on a case-by-case basis, but this isn’t guaranteed.
Where is Capital One car rental insurance available?
Capital One collision damage waivers are valid in the United States and most foreign countries.
However, they’re invalid when you rent in Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. They’re also invalid when they conflict with laws or violate auto rental agreements or terms of individual merchants.
Capital One car rental insurance: What it covers
A Capital One Visa card’s auto rental CDW policy reimburses you if:
- Your rental vehicle is damaged.
- Your rental vehicle is stolen.
- The rental company imposes eligible loss-of-use charges or administrative charges.
- You’re charged reasonable towing fees.
Coverage is valid for 15 consecutive days in your country of residence and 31 consecutive days internationally.
How much am I covered for?
You’re covered up to the actual cash value of your rental — that is, how much it costs to replace the vehicle, minus depreciation.
What does Capital One car rental insurance not cover?
Your Capital One collision damage waiver doesn’t apply to:
- Expensive, antique or exotic vehicles.
- Some vans.
- Vehicles with open cargo beds.
- Motorcycles, motorbikes and mopeds.
- Recreational vehicles.
There are also many cases in which the auto rental CDW doesn’t apply. For example, it’s invalid if your vehicle is stolen or damaged as a result of a rental agreement violation. It also doesn’t reimburse you if your personal effects are lost or stolen.
Is Capital One car rental insurance primary or secondary?
Where you rent your vehicle determines whether your Capital One collision damage waiver offers primary or secondary coverage.
- Coverage is secondary when you rent in your country of residence. This means your Capital One policy covers only what your primary auto insurance or other form of coverage doesn’t.
- Coverage is primary when you rent outside your country of residence. This means you can make a claim through your Capital One policy first.
Your coverage is also affected by whether you have personal auto insurance.
- If you have personal auto insurance: Your Capital One policy covers your deductible. It also pays out for unreimbursed administrative, loss-of-use and reasonable towing charges.
- If you don’t have personal auto insurance: Your Capital One policy reimburses you for eligible costs resulting from theft or damage. It also pays out for administrative, loss-of-use and towing charges.
How to use Capital One car rental insurance
Activating your auto rental collision damage waiver is easy — simply initiate and purchase the entire rental with your eligible Capital One card. Then, decline the CDW the rental company’s representative offers you at the counter.
Consider reading the rental agreement to make sure you’re explicitly declining extra coverage. If you don’t decline the rental company’s CDW, your Capital One car rental coverage won’t apply.
A rental company representative might say you must purchase coverage. In this case, call your CDW benefit administrator at 800-397-9010. Outside the United States, call collect at 303-967-1093.
How to make a claim for Capital One car rental insurance
As soon as possible, call the Capital One benefit administrator at 800-397-9010 to report the theft or damage. If you’re traveling internationally, call collect at 303-967-1093.
If you can’t call immediately, report the theft or damage within 45 days of the incident.
What to submit with your claim
Ask for the following at the time of the incident, or when you return the vehicle:
- A copy of the accident report form and claim document. These should show which costs you must pay for the incident and, if applicable, what you’ve already paid
- A copy of the initial and final rental auto rental agreements, front and back
- A copy of the itemized repair bill and repair estimate
- If available, two photos of the damaged vehicle
- A police report, if you can get one
Submit the materials above to the Capital One benefit administrator, in addition to the following:
- The claim form for the auto rental CDW that you’ve filled out and signed
- Evidence that the entire rental transaction was charged to your card, in the form of a receipt or your monthly billing statement
- A statement from your insurer — or carrier of another form of coverage — listing the costs you’re liable for and, if applicable, what you’ve paid so far. If you don’t have insurance, you must obtain a notarized statement explaining that you don’t have insurance or reimbursement.
- A copy of your primary insurance policy’s declarations page. This shows covered drivers, limits, coverages, deductibles and effective dates.
- Other material requested from you by your benefit administrator
The Capital One benefit administrator gives you 365 days to submit this information. If you have trouble getting all of the material within 90 days of the incident, submit what you have along with the claim form.

Who gets to use Capital One car rental insurance?
As an eligible cardholder and the primary renter of the vehicle, you qualify for Capital One car rental insurance. Other drivers you add to the rental agreement also qualify.
Capital One offers auto rental collision damage waivers with all of its Visa cards. Only a few Mastercard products are guaranteed to have the feature, according to their application pages. If you’re not sure whether your Capital One card has the benefit, call the support number on the back of your card.
