It is not a recommendation to trade or use any services.\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n<h3>Quick overview of cryptocurrency in Canada<\/h3><ul><li><strong>25%<\/strong> of Canadians own cryptocurrency, as of Dec 2025\u2013Jan 2026<\/li><li><strong>9.9%<\/strong> of Canadians own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/cryptocurrency\/bitcoin\">Bitcoin<\/a>, making it Canada\u2019s highest-owned crypto<\/li><li><strong>19.1%<\/strong> of Canadians aged 18\u201334 own Bitcoin<\/li><li><strong>Men (14.9%)<\/strong> are more likely to own Bitcoin than <strong>women (5.1%)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3>How many people in Canada own cryptocurrency?<\/h3><p>It\u2019s no surprise that cryptocurrency is not the primary investment asset for most Canadians, with 69.08% storing cash in chequing\/savings accounts, 43.25% using a TFSA, 33.39% using a RRSP and 20.76% opting for publicly traded investments (stocks, ETFs, etc.), according to our most recent <em>Finder: Consumer Sentiment Survey March 2026<\/em>; however, almost <strong>1 in 4 (25%) of Canadians own crypto<\/strong>, according to the <em>Ontario Securities Commission\u2019s Crypto Assets 2025 survey<\/em>, conducted by Ipsos.<\/p><h3>Which cryptocurrency is the most commonly owned by Canadians?<\/h3><p>According to the Bank of Canada\u2019s Bitcoin Omnibus Survey, <strong>9.9% of Canadians own Bitcoin<\/strong>, making it the most popular cryptocurrency in Canada. The runner-up crytopcurrencies, in terms of popularity, are Ethereum (5%), and Bitcoin Cash and USD Coin (3% each).<sup>(1)<\/sup><\/p><p><a class=\"more-link-arrow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/cryptocurrency\/cryptocurrency-tax-guide\">Canada cryptocurrency tax guide<\/a><\/p><h3>Crypto ownership in Canada and age<\/h3><p>Age has a big impact on whether or not the investor buys and sells cryptocurrency, with <strong>19.1% of Canadians aged 18\u201334<\/strong> owning Bitcoin, compared to <strong>11.4% aged 35\u201354<\/strong> and <strong>2.8% aged 55 and over<\/strong>.<\/p><h3>Cryptocurrency ownership in Canada by gender<\/h3><p>Men are more likely to own the most popular cryptocurrency in Canada, Bitcoin, with <strong>14.9% of men and 5.1% of women<\/strong> owning Bitcoin.<\/p><h3>Crypto ownership in Canada and province<\/h3><p>When it comes to Bitcoin ownership specifically, where an investor lives appears to have an impact. Ontario residents are the most likely to own Bitcoin, at <strong>11.9%<\/strong>, followed by British Columbia (<strong>10.5%<\/strong>) and Quebec (<strong>9.7%<\/strong>). Canada\u2019s middle provinces \u2014 Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba \u2014 have lower combined Bitcoin ownership at <strong>7.8%<\/strong>, and lowest in Atlantic Canada at <strong>3.3%<\/strong>.<\/p><h3>Cryptocurrency adoption statistics in Canada<\/h3><p>The <strong>crypto ownership rate in Canada is 25%<\/strong>, according to the <i>Ontario Securities Commission\u2019s Crypto Assets 2025 survey<\/i>. The total global electricity usage for cryptocurrencies is estimated to be approximately 138 billion kilowatt-hours (138 TWh) per year, which is equivalent to roughly 0.5% of annual global electricity usage.<\/li><li><b>Bitcoin electricity usage:<\/b> Bitcoin is currently the primary electricity user of all cryptocurrencies.
