Finder surveyed 32,771 Internet users across 23 countries and found that people from Canada rank 19th for BNPL remorse, with 11% saying they&#8217;d made a buy now, pay later mistake. This is below the global average of 17% and ahead of countries like Germany 10% and the United States (9%).<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-KmRSI\" title=\"How Canada compares to other countries on BNPL mistakes\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/KmRSI\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><p>The most common Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) mistake in Canada is buying something impulsively, with 5.2% saying they&#8217;d made an impulse purchase. The next most common BNPL mistakes are overstretching their budget (3.1%) and paying a late fee (4.5%).<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-sfNob\" title=\"Most common BNPL mistake in Canada\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/sfNob\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><h3>Men and women equal in their BNPL mistakes in Canada<\/h3><p>Men (11.3%) are just as likely as women (11.3%) to say that they&#8217;ve made a BNPL mistake.<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-F0TdV\" title=\"Made a BNPL mistake, by gender\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/F0TdV\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><p>In 3 out of the 5 BNPL mistake categories, women were more likely than men to say that they&#8217;d made a BNPL error, including:<\/p><ul><li>paying a late fee (5.1%)<\/li><li>overextending their budget (3.2%)<\/li><li>going into overdraft (2.2%)<\/li><\/ul><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-eVbW9\" title=\"Most common BNPL mistake in Canada, by gender\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/eVbW9\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><p>As for those not using BNPL services, more men (24.4%) than women (22.2%) say they&#8217;ve never used a BNPL service.<\/p><h3>People age 45-54 the most likely to have made a BNPL error<\/h3><p>In Canada, those aged 45-54 lead the way in making BNPL mistakes with 12.8% saying they&#8217;d had a purchase issue of some kind using instalment payment services. The next group most likely to have a BNPL mishap was those aged 25-34 (12.6%), followed by people aged 35-44 (11.9%).<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-5OcsA\" title=\"Most common BNPL error, by age\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/5OcsA\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><h3>Global BNPL mistake trends<\/h3>\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-qpR7U\" title=\"Percentage of population making BNPL mistakes\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/qpR7U\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n\n\nThe most common BNPL error was making impulse purchases, with 10% saying they'd made a buy now, pay later mistake saying they'd bought an item on a whim. This was at its highest in Vietnam, with 24% of those in Vietnam buying items on impulse, followed by Thailand (20%) and Sweden (14%).\n\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-dB6Fy\" title=\"Percentage of respondents who&#039;ve made an impulse purchase using a BNPL service\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/dB6Fy\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n\nGetting stuck with late fees was the next most common BNPL mistake, with around 4% saying they'd paid a penalty for not making a payment on time. Those surveyed in Malaysia were most likely to be slugged with buy now, pay later late fees at 9.1%, followed by India (9.08%) and Vietnam (8.7%).\n\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-Ckn07\" title=\"Percentage of respondents who&#039;ve paid a late fees on BNPL purchases\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Ckn07\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n\nGoing overboard on spending was also a somewhat common problem for those who'd made BNPL mistakes, with 3% saying they'd overstretched their budget. Respondents in Vietnam were most susceptible to overspending, with 5% of respondents blowing their budgets. Not too far behind Vietnam is Thailand (5.4%) followed by Italy (5.1%).\n\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-1GzCL\" title=\"Percentage of respondents who say a BNPL purchase led them to overstretch their budget\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/1GzCL\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n\nInterestingly, 34.5% of people in Spain said they'd never used a BNPL service, closely followed by 32.3% of Mexicans and 26.3% of people in the US.\n\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-ylayp\" title=\"BNPL mistakes and usage, by country\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/ylayp\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n<h3>Men more likely to have BNPL remorse<\/h3>\nMen are more likely to say they made a BNPL error than women, with an average of 18.3% of men saying they've made a BNPL mistake compared to 16.2% of women. In fact, in 14 out of the 21 countries surveyed men were more likely to say they'd made a BNPL mistake than women.\n\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-6u092\" title=\"Average percentage of men and women making BNPL mistakes around the globe\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/6u092\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n\nThe highest percentage of men staying they had buyers remorse following a BNPL purchase was in Thailand at 41.5%. The highest percentage of women making buy now, pay later mistakes was in Vietnam, with 38.1%. \n\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-NaxNo\" title=\"Percent of sex who say they&#039;ve made a BNPL mistake, by country\" width=\"100%\"   scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/NaxNo\/1\/\"  loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n<ul class=\"luna-accordionGroup accordionGroup\"><li class=\"luna-accordion\" data-accordion=\"accordion\">\n  <div class=\"luna-accordion__summary\">\n    <h4 class=\"luna-accordion__heading\">\n      <button class=\"luna-accordion__action collapsed\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"accordion0000000000\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#accordion0000000000\">\n        <span class=\"luna-accordion__title\">Methodology<\/span>\n        <svg class=\"luna-icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n          <use xlink:href=\"#chevron-down\" data-accordion-icon=\"show\"><\/use>\n          <use xlink:href=\"#chevron-up\" data-accordion-icon=\"hide\" class=\"is-hidden\"><\/use>\n        <\/svg>\n      <\/button>\n    <\/h4>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"luna-accordion__details collapse\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"accordion0000000000\" data-accordion=\"details\">\n    <div class=\"accordionContent\"><h3>Methodology<\/h3> Finder surveyed 32,771 Internet users across 23 countries in March of 2021 asking them if they'd used Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services and if they'd run into some common mistakes. Due to the varying Google infrastructure in each territory, not all surveys were nationally representative. Where a nationally representative sample was unavailable, a natural fall\/convenience sample was used. For these, Google didn't use stratified sampling but did apply weights to the survey results if the demographics of the survey respondents didn't vary too far from demographics data, as per the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/surveys\/answer\/6189786?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">details of Google's survey methodology<\/a>. The analysis of the results of the survey was completed using Google Data Studio, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/surveys\/answer\/6218145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which weights the responses<\/a>.
