The process is way less complicated than setting up a corporation. We\u2019ll walk through what you need to know about becoming a sole proprietor including how to to register, finance, insure your new business.<\/p><h3>Step 1. Create a business plan for your sole proprietorship<\/h3><p>Technically, you don\u2019t <em>need <\/em>to write a business plan, unless you\u2019re seeking outside investment. However, this remains a hugely beneficial task for sole proprietors either way.<\/p><p>A business plan helps you to understand <em>why <\/em>your business will be profitable. When written properly, it will help you identify and overcome potential hurdles before they pop up. Your sole proprietorship business plan should include the following sections:<\/p><ul class=\"list-10\"><li><strong>Business name and address.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Your mission statement. <\/strong>Why does your business exist? What do you hope to achieve? What is your vision for the future?<\/li><li><strong>Your target market. <\/strong>Include as much detail as possible. Write down <i>why <\/i>you have chosen to serve this demographic. Is there a gap in the market?<\/li><li><strong>Products and services<\/strong>. A full list of what products and services you offer. How much does it cost to deliver each of them? How much will you sell each product and service for? What is the net profit?<\/li><li><strong>Competitors.<\/strong> Who are they? Why would customers choose you instead of them. What is your unique selling point?<\/li><li><strong>Marketing plan.<\/strong> What platforms will you use to market your business? What is your budget for each platform?<\/li><li><strong>Financial plan.<\/strong> What are the estimated monthly running costs of your business, including the cost of launching? What are your monthly sales forecasts and how much profit will that attract? It\u2019s good to have a minimum target, base target and stretch target.<\/li><\/ul><p>You should review and tweak your business plan at least once every quarter to stay focused as needs arise, ideas develop and changes happen.<\/p><h3>Step 2. How to register a sole proprietorship in Canada<\/h3><p>You have to register your sole proprietorship with the province or territory in which you\u2019ll be operating. The only exception is if you plan to run a business under your own first and last name (e.g. \u201cReggie Wilson\u2019s window repairs\u201d), in which case, you don\u2019t have to register so long as you live in BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, the Northwest Territories or Nunavut.<\/p><p>When you register provincially or territorially, you\u2019ll also receive a federal business number (BN). You need a federal business number if you plan to use a CRA program account, which is used for a variety of business purposes like collecting GST\/HST, importing or exporting goods and processing payroll deductions.<\/p><p>Keep all your business information in a safe, accessible place. You may need it to verify your business ownership to clients or financial institutions. You may also need it when interacting with the CRA.<\/p><p>Some extra things to keep in mind:<\/p><ul class=\"list-10\"><li><strong>Sole proprietors do NOT have limited liability.<\/strong> You, personally, will be held liable for business debts or lawsuits against your business. (This is in contrast to corporations, in which each owner\u2019s personal assets are protected from lawsuits against the company under the principle of <strong>limited liability<\/strong>.)<\/li><li><strong>You (personally) and your sole proprietorship are viewed as the same legal entity.<\/strong> You pay income tax and other remittances to the government for both entities through a single, personal tax return \u2014 you don\u2019t file a separate tax return for your business.<\/li><li><strong>Permits and licensing requirements still apply.<\/strong> You must get any licenses and permits required in your line of work, or you could be sued or forced to close. For example, in Ontario, you need a license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to start a one-man brewery.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Step 3. Set up your work space<\/h3><p>Many sole proprietors are able to work without having to rent office space. Still, if you need dedicated office space, there a few cost-cutting options available. Look into getting a virtual office, co-working space or a serviced office. Typically, these are all cheaper than renting a traditional office space.<\/p><p>An online presence is crucial for most businesses to succeed. As such, you\u2019ll need to set up:<\/p><ul class=\"list-10\"><li>A professional website with a unique, memorable domain name<\/li><li>Social media profiles<\/li><li>A presence on Google Maps and other listing websites in your niche<\/li><\/ul><h3>Step 4. Open a business bank account<\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/banking\/business-banking\/small-business-bank-accounts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A business bank account<\/a> works similar to a personal account \u2013 the main difference is that it\u2019s dedicated to your business\u2019s finances. Knowing businesses will need to process frequent deposits in higher amounts than individuals typically deposit, banks often charge a fee per deposit based on the size or type of deposit (cheque, cash etc.).<\/p><p>You should expect similar features to what you\u2019d get with a personal bank account \u2014 such as a debit card, the ability to send and receive payments, optional overdraft option, online and mobile banking and more. Get financial support for your sole proprietorship<\/h3><p>It may cost you a fair amount to launch your business, especially if you have a lot of equipment to buy. Explore small business insurance options<\/h3><p>Some types of businesses may be required to have insurance. For example, in some provinces, janitors and professional cleaners must have janitorial bonds to cover damages related to employee theft and bad work performance. In some cities like Toronto and Vancouver, commercial dog walkers must have liability insurance to cover the cost of damage to people and property, and they must list the municipality as an insured party.<\/p><p>Even if you aren\u2019t required to have business insurance for your sole proprietorship, there are still several types of coverage you may be interested in getting to avoid being out-of-pocket for large, unexpected expenses down the road. These types of coverage include:<\/p><ul class=\"list-10\"><li><strong>General liability <\/strong>(or <strong>Third Party Liability<\/strong>). This protects you and your employees if legal action is brought against your business for damages done to a client\u2019s person or property.<\/li><li><strong>Business contents insurance. <\/strong>This protects any professional assets you keep in your place of business regardless of whether you rent, own or work out of a home office. Coverage can potentially extend to computers, office furniture, inventory, machinery and equipment.<\/li><li><strong>Commercial property. <\/strong>Provides coverage for lost, stolen or damaged equipment.<\/li><li><strong>Personal injury. <\/strong>Helps cover costs associated with recovering from a work-related injury.<\/li><li><strong>Commercial auto coverage. <\/strong>Get car insurance for vehicles you use for business including supply vans, trucks and regular passenger vehicles.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Step 7. Hiring: Can sole proprietors have employees?<\/h3><p>Yes, sole proprietors can employ people. When doing so, you\u2019ll have the same responsibilities as any employer would including:<\/p><ul class=\"list-10\"><li>Making sure your employee(s) complete Form TD1, Personal Tax Credits Return.<\/li><li>Deducting taxes, CPP and EI from employees\u2019 wages and remitting these amounts to the government<\/li><li>Creating a hiring agreement, either verbal or written, for each of your employees<\/li><li>Complying with employment laws in your jurisdiction including minimum wage, work hours, sick pay, vacation pay, statutory holidays, parental leave, pension plan enrollment and more.<\/li><li>Adhering to workplace health and safety requirements<\/li><\/ul><h3>Step 8. Begin marketing your sole proprietorship and (hopefully) make a profit<\/h3><p>With an effective marketing strategy outlined in your business plan, there should be no reason not to start marketing from the day you launch your sole proprietorship. An effective strategy should start attracting customers immediately. Consider the following ideas:<\/p><ul class=\"list-10\"><li><strong>Flyers. <\/strong>Since you\u2019re most likely only targeting customers in your local area, it makes sense to put up flyers around your neighborhood. Target supermarkets, shops, parks, churches, schools, vet clinics and anywhere else where your customers are most likely to be. Make sure you have permission to post in public places or on private property.<\/li><li><strong>Business cards. <\/strong>Get a few hundred business cards printed. Have them in your wallet ready to give to any potential clients you come across. Hand them over to your friends and family members to give to pet owners they know. Give some to your customers, so they can easily refer you to their friends.<\/li><li><strong>Have a blog or online portfolio and best practices for apply search engine optimization (SEO).<\/strong> Draw people to your business by optimizing your web content to rank highly for the keywords and search terms prospective customers are using.<\/li><li><strong>Paid social media advertising. <\/strong>On social media, it\u2019s really easy to target specific demographics. You can restrict advertising to certain populations in specific regions.<\/li><li><strong>Have a referral scheme. <\/strong>Happy customers will be pleased to refer you to their friends, especially when prompted to do so. Perhaps you could even introduce an incentivized referral system.<\/li><li><strong>Cross-promotion. <\/strong>Set up cross-promotional deals with other professionals with whom you can share clientelle. For example, if you\u2019re a wedding photographer or event planner, you could collaborate with other companies that work at weddings such as venues, DJs, florists, etc.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Learn more
