These steps can help ensure you don\u2019t go into a trade-in blind and get a raw deal.<\/p><h4>Step 1: Get an estimate of your car\u2019s value<\/h4><p>Start by getting an estimate of your car\u2019s trade-in value online so you have a number in your head. Be prepared to have the following information on hand to get an accurate estimate. If you own the car, trading it in is relatively straightforward. The dealer subtracts your current car\u2019s value from the new car and you pay the difference. Or if you\u2019re buying a car that costs less than the trade-in price, the dealer writes you a check.<\/p><p>What happens when you have a car loan depends on whether you have positive or negative equity. If your car\u2019s trade-in value is worth more than your car loan balance, the dealer deducts the difference from the price of the new car.<\/p><p>If you have negative equity, you\u2019re responsible for covering the difference between your loan balance and the trade-in price. Follow these pointers to get the best deal out there:<\/p><ul class=\"list-9\"><li><strong>Brush up on your sales tactics.<\/strong> Go into the dealership with an idea of what to expect so you don\u2019t walk away convinced your car is worth less than it actually is.<\/li><li><strong>Negotiate the new car price first.<\/strong> Focusing on the price of the new car you want to buy can help you hone in on the difficult part before tackling the trade-in deal.<\/li><li><strong>Time it right.<\/strong> Dealers are often more flexible at the end of the month or year, when they\u2019re trying to move cars off the lot.<\/li><\/ul><h3>How to trade in a car that is not paid off<\/h3><p>If you want to trade in a car that you haven\u2019t finished paying off yet, the dealership will evaluate how much your car is worth and apply any positive difference between your car\u2019s value and your loan amount as a deduction on your new vehicle\u2019s price. If it turns out that you owe more on your car than it\u2019s worth, you\u2019ll have to pay the remaining amount on your old car loan and you won\u2019t get a discount on a new vehicle from the dealership.<\/p><h4>How to roll over a car loan<\/h4><p>If you still owe money on your old car loan, dealerships often suggest rolling over your old loan into whatever financing you secure to purchase your next car. While it can seem convenient to not have to pay off your old car before buying a new one, it also adds to the total amount you\u2019ll need to pay back on your next loan.
