It\u2019s best known for its cash transfer service, which allows you to send money to a global network of 500,000+ agent locations (including thousands in Canada).<\/p><p>Western Union also allows you to transfer money to an overseas bank account or mobile wallet. You can transfer money online, via a mobile app or by visiting a Western Union location.<\/p><h3>Is Western Union legitimate in Canada?<\/h3><p>Yes, Western Union is a legitimate and regulated money transfer provider in Canada. Receiving options for your money include cash pickup, bank account and mobile wallet.<\/li>\n                                    <li><strong>Wide range of payment methods.<\/strong> You can pay for your transfer with a credit card, debit card, bank transfer, Interac e-Transfer or cash (for in-store transfers).<\/li>\n                                    <li><strong>First transfer is fee-free.<\/strong> You typically don\u2019t have to pay any fees on your first Western Union online money transfer.<\/li>\n                                    <li><strong>Transparent fees.<\/strong> We liked that you can see the exchange rate you\u2019ll receive and fees you\u2019ll have to pay on the app or website without even logging in to your Western Union account.<\/li>\n                            <\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n    \n            <div class=\"fin-pros-cons__section\">\n            <h4 class=\"fin-pros-cons__heading\">Cons<\/h4>\n            <ul class=\"icon-list icon-list--x-circle\">\n                                    <li><strong>Exchange rate markup.<\/strong> Western Union applies an exchange rate markup when you send your Canadian dollars to another currency. The size of the markup depends on the currency you\u2019re sending to, but you may find a better rate from a low-cost competitor like Pesa or Instarem.<\/li>\n                                    <li><strong>Transfer fees.<\/strong> You\u2019ll also need to pay a fee when you send money with Western Union. The fee can vary depending on the type of transfer you send and your payment method.<\/li>\n                                    <li><strong>Transfer limits.<\/strong> Western Union\u2019s transfer limits are confusing. The FAQ states you can send a maximum of $7,500 if you start your transfer online and finish it at an agent location, but we noticed some destinations have a much larger limit. For example, we could initiate a transfer of up to $65,000 to a recipient\u2019s bank account in the US.<\/li>\n                            <\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<h3>Testing the Western Union app to see how much it really charges<\/h3><p>To see how Western Union compares to the 18 other money transfer services we tested, we ran test transfers from Canada to India and Ukraine. We compared Western Union\u2019s quoted exchange rates against the mid-market rate at the time and factored in any transfer fees to calculate the true total cost markup.<\/p><p>For a $200 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/international-money-transfers\/send-money-internationally\/send-money-to-india\">transfer to India<\/a>, Western Union\u2019s lowest total cost markup of 1.47% was more competitive than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/international-money-transfers\/ria-international-money-transfers\">Ria\u2019s<\/a> at 1.75% and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/international-money-transfers\/remitbee\">Remitbee\u2019s<\/a> at 1.97%, but still more expensive than providers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/international-money-transfers\/pesa-review\">Pesa<\/a> at 0.53% and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/international-money-transfers\/instarem-money-transfer\">Instarem<\/a> at 0.70%.<\/p><p>Western Union became much more competitive for larger transfers. For a $1,000 transfer to India, its total cost markup fell to just 0.48%, making it the cheapest provider we tested, ahead of Remitbee at 0.76%, Ria at 1.01%, Instarem at 0.63% and Pesa at 0.53%.<\/p><p>However, we found that Western Union\u2019s pricing varies significantly by destination country. While transfer costs to popular remittance corridors like India were highly competitive, less common destinations were much more expensive. For example, a $200 transfer to Ukraine carried a total cost markup of 4.00%, compared to 2.57% with Wise and 2.58% with Remitbee.<\/p><h3>What are Western Union\u2019s transfer fees?<\/h3><p>Western Union\u2019s fees, like those of the other money transfer services we tested, vary depending on the destination, payment method, delivery method, and transfer amount. You can see the exact fee before initiating a transfer, though, using the calculator on the Western Union website or app.<\/p><p>Some corridors, payment and delivery methods are free, though. Its frequently asked questions state these transfer limits:<\/p><ul><li>Cash: No limit<\/li><li>Credit or debit card: $5,000<\/li><li>Bank transfer: $5,000<\/li><li>Payment at agent locations for transfers started online: $7,500<\/li><\/ul><p>However, when we initiated a transfer funded by debit card to countries like the United States and the Philippines, we were able to send up to $65,000 CAD to a recipient\u2019s bank account. So, if you want to send more than the stated limits, higher amounts may be available.<\/p><h3>How long does an international Western Union money transfer take?<\/h3><p>Western Union is known for its fast transfer speeds, but these speeds vary depending on the destination, payment method and delivery method.<\/p><p>Using the Philippines as an example again, here\u2019s how long you can expect a transfer to take:<\/p><ul><li>Interac e-Transfer: Minutes<\/li><li>Debit card: Minutes<\/li><li>Bank account via Plaid: 3 to 5 business days<\/li><li>Credit card: Minutes<\/li><li>Mobile wallet: Minutes<\/li><li>Cash: Minutes<\/li><\/ul><h3>What it\u2019s like to use the Western Union app?<\/h3><p>Western Union\u2019s app is one of the most comprehensive money transfer apps we\u2019ve tried. Even without logging in, you can view transfer fees, estimated delivery times, transfer limits and exchange rates. You can also track your transfer with your 10-digit tracking number, browse available rewards and deals and find nearby agent locations.<\/p><p>After logging in, you\u2019ll have access to a range of additional features, including the ability to send and receive money, manage payment and receiving methods, view your transfer history and add new recipients.
