When adding 15% sales tax, the car would cost her $14,950. Using the 20\/4\/10 rule, she\u2019ll pay a 20% down payment on the car\u2014$2,990 in this case\u2014from her savings.<\/p><p>She then compares auto financing offers for the remaining $11,960 cost of the car ($14,950 \u2013 $2,990 down payment). Because of her excellent credit score, she\u2019s offered a four-year loan term and a 5.5% interest rate, resulting in a $278.15\/month car loan payment.<\/p><p>That means Molly will be spending a total of $278.15 + $425 = $703.15 on all of her car-related expenses per month, which is within her budgeted amount of $708 based on the 20\/4\/10 rule.<\/p><\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/article><h3 id=\"10-15rule\">The 10% to 15% rule for how much to spend based on salary<\/h3><p>The 10% to 15% rule gives you a general guideline for estimating how much car you can afford based on your salary.
