What banking goals do they want to achieve in the year ahead? Do the Big Five still rule the roost in the age of digital challenger banks?<\/p><p>To find the answers to these questions, we surveyed 1,001 Canadians about their banking habits and preferences as part of the <em>Finder: Consumer Sentiment Survey January 2025<\/em>. Here\u2019s what we found.<\/p><article class=\"luna-card--border\"><div class=\"luna-card__block\"><h3>Banking statistics in Canada: Highlights<\/h3><ul><li style=\"padding-bottom: 14px;\">Nearly one third of Canadians (<strong>29.37%<\/strong>) have never switched bank accounts.<\/li><li style=\"padding-bottom: 14px;\">The Big Five Banks are still the most trusted banks in Canada with <strong>75.92%<\/strong> of people willing to open an account with them compared to <strong>48.25%<\/strong> with digital banks and fintechs.<\/li><li style=\"padding-bottom: 14px;\">Account sign-up offers are a big decision-making factor with <strong>55.54%<\/strong> of Canadians saying they would switch banks to take advantage of an advertised offer.<\/li><li style=\"padding-bottom: 14px;\">The majority of Canadians (<strong>96.90%<\/strong>) have at least one chequing account.<\/li><li style=\"padding-bottom: 14px;\">Saving is a top priority for Canadians with <strong>21.88%<\/strong> planning to open a savings account in 2025.<\/li><li style=\"padding-bottom: 14px;\">Between no-fee accounts and waive-fee conditions, almost half of Canadians (<strong>47.15%<\/strong>) don\u2019t pay a monthly fee for their account.<\/li><li style=\"padding-bottom: 14px;\">Only <strong>10.19%<\/strong> of Canadians still prefer to manage their banking needs primarily with in-branch banking.<\/li><li style=\"padding-bottom: 14px;\">Most people (<strong>69.63%<\/strong>) opened their first bank account before turning 18 years old.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/article><h3>Chequing accounts are the most common account type<\/h3><p>Chequing accounts are the most popular type of account in Canada with <strong>96.90%<\/strong> of Canadians currently holding at least one chequing account. Of that, <strong>61.94% <\/strong>have one chequing account, while <strong>28.27%<\/strong> of respondents have two.<\/p><p>Interestingly, <strong>3.10%<\/strong> of Canadians don\u2019t have a chequing account at all.<\/p><p>Savings accounts are also in high demand, with <strong>55.84%<\/strong> of people owning one savings account and <strong>24.38%<\/strong> having two. Additionally, Canadians appear to be taking advantage of Tax-Free Savings Accounts with nearly half (<strong>47.65%<\/strong>) of respondents indicating that they have one TFSA.<\/p><p>It\u2019s also clear that building up long-term savings is a key financial goal for many Canadians. The most popular registered account in Canada is a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), which <strong>44.26%<\/strong> of Canadians currently hold, followed by RESPs at <strong>18.28%<\/strong>.<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-X9KJI\" title=\"How many of each account type do you have?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"491\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Grouped Columns\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/X9KJI\/1\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><h3>Canadians want to save more money in 2025<\/h3><p>As 2025 rolls on, Canadians are keeping a keen eye on their savings goals. When survey participants were asked which types of bank accounts they plan to open this year, the number-one response was a savings account (<strong>21.88%<\/strong>). This was closely followed by a TFSA (<strong>18.98%<\/strong>) and a GIC (<strong>16.68%<\/strong>), showing that, even though interest rates have dropped in recent times, Canadians still want their money to work harder for them.<\/p><p>A new chequing account is also on the shopping list for a decent chunk of the population, with <strong>15.88%<\/strong> on the lookout for a new day-to-day banking account. But many of us are all sorted on the bank account front, with <strong>39.66%<\/strong> of respondents indicating that they don\u2019t plan to open any new accounts in 2025.<article class=\"luna-card luna-card--primary luna-card--border\">\n  <div class=\"luna-card__block\" style=\"padding:0.7em\">\n<span style=\"font-size:0.9em; font-weight: 800; font-style: italic; text-transform: uppercase;\">Related: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/savings-accounts\/best-high-interest-savings-accounts\" style=\"text-decoration:underline; font-size:0.9em;\">Best high interest savings accounts<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-F7JW3\" title=\"What types of bank accounts do you plan to open in 2025?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"444\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Bar Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/F7JW3\/1\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p><h3>Canadians are loyal<\/h3><p>Nearly 1 in 3 Canadians (<strong>29.37%<\/strong>) have never switched bank accounts, preferring to pick and stick with their chosen financial institution. A further <strong>18.18%<\/strong> only switch every 10 or more years. While it\u2019s not exactly a case of \u201ctill death do us part,\u201d that\u2019s a long-term relationship no matter which way you look at it.<\/p><p>That said, there are also plenty of Canadians who regularly shop around for a better deal. <strong>19.28%<\/strong> sign up for a new bank account every four to six years, while <strong>15.78%<\/strong> open a new account every one to three years.<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-iiQ35\" title=\"How often do you typically sign up for a new bank account?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"327\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Bar Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/iiQ35\/1\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><h3>More than half of us still pay monthly fees<\/h3><p>There are several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/chequing-accounts\/best-no-fee-chequing-accounts\">no-fee chequing accounts<\/a> available in Canada, but more than half of us are still forking out for bank fees each month. <strong>52.85%<\/strong> of respondents said they still pay a monthly fee for their bank account. Of those, <strong>18.98%<\/strong> are slugged with a fee of $5 \u2013 $12 each month, <strong>17.78%<\/strong> pay between $12.01 and $18 each month and <strong>11.29%<\/strong> pay less than $5. Spare a thought for the 4.8% of respondents who pay a monthly fee of more than $18.<\/p><p>The good news is that more than <strong>28%<\/strong> of us have an account with no monthly fee, and almost <strong>19%<\/strong> meet a minimum balance requirement to have the monthly fee waived.<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-0W97k\" title=\"Do you pay a monthly fee for your bank account?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"306\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Bar Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/0W97k\/1\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><article class=\"luna-card luna-card--primary luna-card--border\">\n  <div class=\"luna-card__block\" style=\"padding:0.7em\">\n<span style=\"font-size:0.9em; font-weight: 800; font-style: italic; text-transform: uppercase;\">Dive deeper: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/chequing-accounts\/best-chequing-accounts\" style=\"text-decoration:underline; font-size:0.9em;\">Best chequing accounts<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><h3>Big love for the Big Five<\/h3><p>The Big Five (RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank and CIBC) have been challenged by the emergence of plenty of digital banks and fintechs in recent years, but Canadians remain loyal to the country\u2019s five largest banks. Three out of every four respondents (<strong>75.92%<\/strong>) said they would consider opening an account with a Big Five bank, while less than half (<strong>48.25%<\/strong>) said they would consider signing up with a digital bank or fintech like Tangerine, Simplii Financial, EQ Bank or KOHO.<\/p><p>Of course, the Big Five and digital banks are far from the only options available to Canadians.<\/p><p>Other brick-and-mortar banks (e.g. National Bank and ATB) are an option that <strong>26.67%<\/strong> of people said they would consider, while <strong>25.87%<\/strong> would consider credit unions (e.g. Coast Capital, Meridian, Vancity and Alterna).<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-v7Zqf\" title=\"What type of financial providers would you consider opening a bank account with?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"227\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Bar Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/v7Zqf\/1\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><h3>The future is here\u2014and it\u2019s digital<\/h3><p>When was the last time you visited a bank branch to perform a transaction? If you can\u2019t remember, you\u2019re not alone. Just <strong>10.19%<\/strong> of respondents use in-branch banking as their primary method of managing their banking needs.<\/p><p>That pales in comparison to the <strong>48.95%<\/strong> who primarily rely on mobile banking and the <strong>40.86%<\/strong> who list online banking as their main way of managing their money. The digital banking revolution is well and truly here!<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-EfAQQ\" title=\"What is your preferred method of managing your banking needs?\" width=\"700\" height=\"567\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Pie Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/EfAQQ\/1\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p><h3>Starting young<\/h3><p>The majority of Canadians opened their first bank account before they had even turned 18 years old with <strong>69.63%<\/strong> of survey respondents opening an account before celebrating their 18th birthday. No monthly account fee (or at the very least a low monthly fee) is the number-one feature Canadians look for when choosing a new bank account\u2014two in three people (<strong>65.43%<\/strong>) nominate it as their top must-have.<\/p><p>The next most important account essentials are no or low transaction fees (<strong>51.25%<\/strong>) and free e-Transfers (<strong>40.06%<\/strong>), so it\u2019s safe to say avoiding fees is a major concern when choosing an account.<\/p><p>On the flipside, most Canadians could leave budgeting and spending-tracking tools with just <strong>2%<\/strong> of survey respondents keen for more of these tools in a new account.<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-SxnZ0\" title=\"What are the top three features that are important to you when choosing a new bank account?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"427\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Bar Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/SxnZ0\/1\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><h3>Canadians love a good deal<\/h3><p>Have you been made an offer that\u2019s too good to refuse? If you can\u2019t say no to a cash welcome bonus or a bonus savings account interest rate, you\u2019re not alone. More than half of Canadians (<strong>55.54%<\/strong>) say they would switch banks to take advantage of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/ca\/banking\/new-bank-account-offers\">advertised promotional offer<\/a>.<\/p><p>A much lower percentage of respondents (<strong>18.58%<\/strong>) said a promo offer can\u2019t tempt them to switch, while one in four (<strong>25.87%<\/strong>) said that, while they wouldn\u2019t switch, a sign-up bonus would be an important factor in their decision to switch.<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-5sItc\" title=\"Would you switch banks to take advantage of an advertised promotional offer?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"494\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Column Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/5sItc\/2\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><h3>Promo pleasure or pain<\/h3><p>Are promo offers worth the hassle of switching banks? It depends on who you ask.<\/p><p>There are many Canadians who refuse to give in to special offers and prefer to stick with their current bank instead, with <strong>49.55%<\/strong> of respondents saying they have never switched banks because of a promo offer.<\/p><p>On the other side of the coin, a sizable <strong>30.57%<\/strong> of respondents had not only switched banks because of a promo offer but said they were pleased with the offer and kept their new account.<\/p><p>But promo regret is real for some, with <strong>8.39%<\/strong> of people indicating that, though they had switched to take advantage of a special offer, they ended up being disappointed with the offer.<\/p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-fgrL9\" title=\"Have you ever switched banks to take advantage of a promotional sign-up offer?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"505\" scrolling=\"yes\" aria-label=\"Column Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/fgrL9\/3\/\" style=\"border: none;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><h3>Bottom line<\/h3><p>The <em>Finder: Consumer Sentiment Survey January 2025<\/em> reveals some interesting trends about how we bank in the modern world. It shows that mobile banking is king, that Canadians hate bank fees (even though many have accounts with monthly fees) and that saving money is a key goal in the year ahead. Even though there are plenty of digital and alternative challengers to the country\u2019s largest banks, the Big Five are still the number-one choice for the majority of Canadians.<\/p>\n<div
