Where to watch The Witcher online in Canada

Fill the Game of Thrones-shaped hole in your heart with Netflix's hit fantasy show, The Witcher.

One of the most highly-anticipated shows of 2019, Netflix’s The Witcher made a real splash, especially among book and gaming enthusiasts. The fantasy series dropped on Netflix in late December, 2019, and has received enormous praise for its tremendous cast and behind-the-scenes talent.

The streaming giant is releasing copious amounts of original content every week, so it’s natural for some of its titles to get lost among all the noise. That hasn’t been the case for The Witcher, though, which arrived on Netflix with great fanfare, at least judging by initial fan reactions.

If you’re eager to join in the fun, here’s everything you need to know about this hit release.

What is The Witcher about?

The Witcher is based on the book series of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, which also inspired a popular series of video games.

The story revolves around Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter (or Witcher) with supernatural powers. He struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove to be more dangerous than beasts and generally leads a fairly solitary life.

However, destiny brings Geralt closer to a powerful sorceress and a young princess, with the three banding together to navigate a world full of magic and monsters.

When was The Witcher released on Netflix Canada?

The first season of The Witcher became available on Netflix Canada on December 20, 2019.

How many episodes are in the first season of The Witcher?

The first season of the show will consist of eight episodes. In traditional Netflix fashion, all will be released at the same time. If you’re curious, here are the episode titles:

  1. The End’s Beginning
  2. Four Marks
  3. Betrayer Moon
  4. Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials
  5. Bottled Appetites
  6. Rare Species
  7. Before a Fall
  8. Much More

The Witcher has already been renewed for Season 2, which is scheduled to be released in 2021.

Who stars in The Witcher?

Geralt is played by Henry Cavill, Superman himself. You might know him from the DC Universe, where he portrayed the iconic superhero in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League. Or from other movies like Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Stardust, Blood Creek, or The Man from U.N.C.L.E. On the TV front, he played Charles Brandon on The Tudors.

Besides Cavill, the main cast includes Freya Allan as Princess Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg. You’ll also see Jodhi May, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Adam Levy, MyAnna Buring, Mimi Ndiweni and more.

Is The Witcher any good?

Yes. The hype is real. Netflix couldn’t afford a flop, especially after scoring Cavill as the lead and investing heavily in marketing for the series prior to its release.

The Witcher had big shoes to fill, being positioned by Netflix as the natural successor to Game of Thrones, and likely benefited from fans of the books and games tuning in early and urging their friends to do the same.

The only obstacle to the Netflix show’s success may be the release strategy. By releasing episodes on a weekly basis, each episode remains part of the cultural conversation for a longer period of time. However, making every episode in a season available at once generates plenty of buzz for shows, and networks sometimes bank on the hype lasting for months following shows’ release dates.

Though there is an advantage to releasing episodes weekly, that didn’t stop Stranger Things from becoming a massive hit, so we’re guessing Netflix isn’t too worried.

Furthermore, The Witcher is created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who also worked as a writer and producer for shows like The West Wing, Daredevil and The Umbrella Academy. Alik Sakharov, who also worked on Game of Thrones, is an executive producer and directed three episodes.

Last but not least, Netflix put together an early screening for the premiere of The Witcher. The reactions were largely positive. This is definitely a must-watch show that you should tune into and see for yourself.
