This exciting origin story gives us a new hero to cheer for.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has all the ingredients of a successful Marvel blockbuster. A charming lead? Check! Spectacular action scenes? You betcha. The opportunity to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in intriguing ways? Very much so.

Filmed primarily in Sydney, the movie introduces Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, a young man living a seemingly normal life in New York. However, his past is more complicated, and soon he will be caught in the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

If you’ve missed the film in cinemas or are keen for a re-watch, we have excellent news.

When does Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings come out?

The Marvel film arrives on streaming services in Canada on Friday November 12.

How to watch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings online in Canada

The film, which originally came out in September, will premiere exclusively on Disney Plus as part of the platform’s Disney Plus Day line-up. The movie will be available to all subscribers for no extra fee. That’s sooner than expected, especially since theatrical releases usually make it to the Disney Plus library 3 months after hitting cinemas.

Besides the Marvel blockbuster, subscribers can enjoy other highly-anticipated premieres for Disney Plus Day. The list includes Jungle Cruise, Dopesick, Olaf Presents, season 2 of The World According to Jeff Goldblum and more. There will also be a special focused on the MCU which highlights current titles and hopefully gives fans a sneak peek at what’s to come.

Subscriptions to Disney Plus usually cost $11.99 a month or $119.99 annually. You can cancel your subscription at anytime. The service doesn’t offer a free trial at the moment, but you can get a massive savings for Disney Plus Day. For a limited time, the first month for new and returning customers is just $1.99.

Disney Plus has a wide library of TV shows and movies, including titles from subsidiaries like Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic. You can watch most of the MCU movies, as well as Marvel TV series WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and What If…? New series Hawkeye is scheduled to come out later this month.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings preview

This is the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first to feature a predominantly Asian cast.

Besides Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, the film stars Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, Tony Leung as leader of the Ten Rings Wenwu, and Meng’er Zhang as Shang-Chi’s sister Xu Xialing.

The cast also includes Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng. Fans of the MCU will also recognize Benedict Wong, who reprises his role as Wong for this movie.

The story is pretty straight-forward. Young man with incredible abilities (martial arts skills this time around), runs away from his troubled past and tries to lead a normal life. However, the past catches up with him. He has to step up, confront his demons and hopefully save the day.

Just because the premise sounds familiar doesn’t mean the film is any less memorable. Quite the opposite. With dazzling action sequences and committed performances, the movie delivers not only a compelling story, but captivating characters you’ll be dying to see again.

It also gives viewers a chance to learn more about the Ten Rings, a criminal organization first mentioned in the MCU in Iron Man. That’s more than a decade ago.

If you’re unfamiliar with Marvel, don’t let that detract you from experiencing this movie in all its mesmerizing glory. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a delight regardless of your previous knowledge of this ever-expanding cinematic universe. You might miss an Easter egg here and there, but you’ll still find the film entertaining.

The movie premiered to positive reviews and currently has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Mark your calendars for November 12.
