Here's what you need to know about Ottawa's current restrictions.

The city of Ottawa is in a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Residents of the region are under instruction to stay at home as much as possible. As restrictions begin to ease, here’s what has opened up to the public again.

Note, the below is accurate as of 28 February, 2021. Due to the evolving nature of the situation, the information provided can change at any time. Contact the venue before visiting to confirm. Social distancing and maintaining good hygiene still apply.

What restrictions are in place for Ottawa residents?

  • Households are limited to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors.
  • Organized public events and gatherings in staffed businesses and facilities are limited to 50 people indoors and 100 people outside.
  • Dine-in options in restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs are limited to 50 people indoors and a maximum of 4 people per table.
  • Attractions, museums, art galleries, movie theatres and entertainment venues are allowed to reopen. Cinemas have an indoor limit of 50 people and outdoor theatres cannot have more than 100 people. Performing arts facilities can have 50 indoor guests and 100 outdoor guests. Casinos, bingo halls and gaming establishments can have no more than 50 people total. Games tables are not permitted.
  • Team sports must be updated to ensure no physical contact is made. There is currently a maximum of 50 people per league.
  • Indoor gyms, outdoor sporting and recreational fitness facilities are open with restrictions. A maximum of 10 people per class and 50 people in areas with exercise machines and weights applies to indoor facilities. Outdoor classes can have 25 people per class.
  • Selected indoor and outdoor swimming pools are open.
  • Funerals and weddings can hold 30% capacity indoors and up to 100 people outdoors.
  • People are encouraged not to go on vacation. Holiday home and vacation rentals should only be used by those in need of somewhere to stay.

Yes. As Ottawa enters orange-zone restrictions, many of the city’s attractions are set to reopen.

    Are walking trails, beaches and parks open in Ottawa?

    City parks and outdoor skating rinks are open to the public. It is vital that you keep two metres between you and other members of the public. The parks may be used for exercise, the fitness equipment, playgrounds, recreational facilities and tobogganing hills.

    Beaches are currently closed for the season.

    Are malls open in Ottawa?

    Malls are open to the public. Essential shops are open including supermarkets, food retailers, liquor stores, laundromats, dry cleaners and banks. Other essential retailers that are available for in-person shopping include outdoor food markets, automated and self-service car washes, snow cleaning and landscaping services.

    All other retailers are allowed to repen with restrictions. Guests must wear a mask in stores and fitting rooms cannot be directly next to each other. Retailers must create line-ups outside their stores.

    Are hotels open in Ottawa?

    Yes, hotels in Ottawa are open. Shared public spaces such as swimming pools, lounges, in-house restaurants, bars, meeting rooms and patios may still be closed or hold restrictions. Hotel cleaning protocols have been upgraded to meet the new COVID-19 standards of disinfection and social distancing is being enforced.

    Do I need to pre-book to visit dining venues and attractions?

    With hospitality venues finally able to host customers on-site, we recommend pre-booking a reservation either online or over the phone. With updated floor plans that reflect the new COVID-19 standards and fewer tables available, this ensures you don’t miss out.

    Are restaurants, cafes and bars open in Ottawa?

    Indoor and outdoor dining at restaurants, cafes and bars is open once again. There is a maximum of 50 people allowed indoors, with four people per table.

    Buffets are not permitted. All establishments must be closed by 10pm, the selling of alcohol must cease at 9pm and no one can consume alcohol after 10pm.

    Takeout, drive-thru and home delivery are also highly encouraged in order to help local businesses at this time.
