The province of Alberta has announced a gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions. The four-step approach will see different venues and attractions open depending on the number of daily hospitalizations. So far, indoor fitness centres, restaurants and bars have been reopened, with social distancing and enhanced hygiene practices in place.

What restrictions are in place for Edmonton residents?

If you live in the Edmonton area, the following rules apply:

  • Public and private indoor gatherings are prohibited. People who live alone are allowed to have two close contacts.
  • Outdoor social gatherings may include up to 10 people.
  • Masks must be worn in indoor workplaces, on public transport and in all indoor public spaces.
  • One-on-one training is permitted in gyms, dance studios and skating rinks.
  • No sports games, team practices or group exercise is allowed.
  • People from the same household can dine in restaurants, pubs and cafes with a maximum of six people per table.
  • Liquor service will end at 10pm and dining by 11pm.
  • Places of worship and retail stores can open with a cap of 15% of the fire code capacity.
  • Personal and wellness centres, including hair and beauty salons, tanning shops and tattoo parlours, will open by appointment only.
  • Hotels can remain open but should adhere to social distancing rules.
  • A maximum of 20 people can attend funerals, but receptions are prohibited.
  • School-related children’s sports and activities can go-ahead.
  • Outdoor recreation, including parks and outdoor skating rinks, are open.
  • All but essential travel is advised, both domestic and international.
  • Weddings are limited to a maximum of 10 people including the bride, groom and officiant.
  • All entertainment and recreational facilities must remain closed, including museums, movie theatres and art galleries.
  • If possible, you should be working from home.

Are attractions open in Edmonton?

Not yet. As long as the number of daily hospitalizations remains above 300, all indoor venues, including performance venues, sporting events, casinos, movie theatres, museums, libraries and zoos, will remain closed.

Are walking trails, beaches and parks open in Edmonton?

Most outdoor recreation facilities in Edmonton, including walking trails, beaches and parks, are now open to the public. Additionally, outdoor skating rinks, sledding hills and Nordic ski areas are also open, as long as social distancing measures are in place.

Outdoor group activity is currently limited to groups of 10 people. Keeping the activity to members of the same household is highly recommended. Where this isn’t possible, members of different households should keep a distance of at least two metres at all times.

Are malls open in Edmonton?

All shopping malls and retail outlets can open under the current restrictions in Edmonton. However, shops must limit their capacity to no more than 15% of their fire code occupancy. This number does not include staff working in the shops. Members of the public are also encouraged to shop alone or only with members of the same household.

Are hotels open in Edmonton?

Hotels and motels in Edmonton are currently allowed to open under coronavirus restrictions. However, hotels must abide by the current restrictions, only allowing members of the same household to be part of one booking. Both domestic and international travel is heavily discouraged at the moment.

Do I need to pre-book to visit dining venues and attractions?

Most attractions remain closed in Edmonton, while restaurants, bars and cafes are accepting bookings of up to six people from the same household. You do not have to book a table in advance, but it is highly encouraged. All tables will need to provide the contact information of at least one person.

Are restaurants, cafes and bars open in Edmonton?

From 9 April 2021, dining venues have reverted back to not allowing people to dine indoors. Patio dining with members of your household or two close contacts if you live alone is allowed and you can make an order for takeout or delivery.

Entertainment venues remain closed.

What’s closed in Edmonton?

As long as the daily hospitalizations remain above 450, the following will remain closed:

  • Conference centres
  • Banquet halls
  • Trade shows
  • Concert venues
  • Community centres
  • Festivals
  • Casinos
  • Movie theatres
  • Museums
  • Art galleries
  • Libraries
  • Indoor entertainment venues

When daily hospitalizations dip below 450, we may see the gradual opening of banquet halls, community halls, conference centres, and the relaxation of hotel, retail and indoor fitness regulations.

As the daily rate drops below 300, adult team sports, casinos, racing centres and bingo halls may open. There may also be a relaxation on indoor social gatherings, indoor seated events, libraries, museums, art galleries, zoos and places of worship.

Finally, when the daily rate of hospitalizations sits below 150, we could see the opening of amusement parks, concerts, festivals, performance activities, sporting events and trade shows as well as an easing on restrictions around wedding ceremonies and the workplace.
