As restrictions ease, find out what’s open again in Calgary.

Alberta’s bending of the curve has allowed for the relaxing of some rules as of February 8, 2021. Keep in mind a state of emergency still applies, so try to avoid non-essential travel, wear a mask at all times (covering mouth and nose) and keep a distance of two metres from other members of the public.

Note, the below is accurate as of 28 February, 2021. Due to the evolving nature of the situation, the information provided can change at any time. Contact the venue before visiting to confirm. Social distancing and maintaining good hygiene still apply.

What restrictions are in place for Calgary residents?

  • Households are limited to residents only. Guests and indoor gatherings are not permitted.
  • A maximum of 10 people can gather in public places and outdoor settings.
  • A maximum of six people can be seated at a table in restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and lounges. Tables must be two metres apart and individuals have to be from the same household (or two close contacts for those living alone).
  • Attractions, museums, art galleries, movie theatres and entertainment venues remain closed to the public.
  • Group and community sport is not permitted.
  • Indoor gyms and fitness centres are closed with some exceptions. One-on-one household training is permitted for indoor fitness in dance studios and figure skating training. These must be set by appointment and scheduled, no walk-ins or groups are permitted. Workouts without a certified trainer aren’t allowed. Trainers and clients must distance themselves at least three metres apart.
  • Outdoor recreational activities are restricted to one-on-one training or groups with 10 people or less. Groups are encouraged to stay within the same household, members of different households must maintain two metres in distance. Sports where a two-metre social distance cannot be held are not permitted (shinny, tag etc.). Outdoor skating rinks, sledding hills and Nordic ski areas are open, more than 10 people can use these public facilities as long as social distancing is being maintained.
  • Indoor and outdoor pools are open with restrictions. Scheduled one-on-one training with a certified trainer is permitted.
  • A maximum of 10 people can attend a wedding ceremony and 20 people for funeral services (mandatory masks and keeping a two-metre distance between households are required). Wedding and funeral receptions are not permitted.
  • People must not go on holidays. Holiday home or vacation rentals are open to those in need of somewhere to stay.

Are walking trails, beaches and parks open in Calgary?

Beaches are closed for the season. Parks are open to the public for use. You can make the most of all the parks facilities, including playgrounds, fitness and recreational facilities. Remember to keep two metres between you and members of the public.

Are malls open in Calgary?

Malls and shopping centres are partially open at a maximum of 15% capacity. Food court areas are open for takeaway purposes only.

Retail services that are open include grocery stores, markets, pharmacies, clothing and sporting goods, computer and technology, hardware and automotive, liquor and cannabis, pet supplies and gift shops.

Are hotels open in Calgary?

Hotels, motels, hunting and fishing lodges are open, but there are restrictions on in-house restaurants, bars, fitness centres and wellness services. Venues across the city are implementing cleaning and disinfection standards in line with COVID-19 protocols. Keep in mind that establishments may keep some shared public spaces closed for the time being.

Do I need to pre-book to visit dining venues and attractions?

To ensure a smooth return to in-person dining, many restaurants ask that you pre-book a reservation either over the phone or online. With updated floor plans and fewer tables available, there’s a high likelihood that you won’t be able to dine in as a walk-in.

Attractions in Calgary are still closed and do not require reservations.

Are restaurants, cafes and bars open in Calgary?

Yes, in-person dining is open with restrictions. There is a limit of six people per table, and individuals must be from the same household (people living alone can have up to two close contacts). Tables in the dining area must be two metres apart and contact information must be provided from one person in your party.

Liquor service ends at 10pm, in-person dining ends at 11pm and entertainment is not permitted. This includes live music, pool tables and VLTs.
