Rapid antigen tests are not accepted by border authorities in every country. Before travelling, you should always check with your airline or country of destination to find out what type of tests are acceptable.

To travel to or from Canada, you’ll need one of the following types of tests:

  1. PCR – polymerase chain reaction
  2. Nucleic acid test (NAT) or Nucleic acid amplification test (NAATs)
  3. Reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP)
  4. Rapid antigen test administered or observed by a professional within 1 day of travel

If the rapid antigen test you get from MyZone is taken under the supervision of a medical professional, it may be valid for travel. Check the government of Canada website for the latest testing and vaccination requirements for travellers.

The Canadian Shield customer reviews

The Canadian Shield doesn’t have very many online reviews, so it’s difficult to say what customers think about its services. However, the company seems fairly well-respected in the industry and has several positive reviews from news agencies.

Are The Canadian Shield rapid antigen COVID-19 tests accurate?

The Canadian Shield sells BTNX Rapid Response antigen test kits. These tests have a moderate sensitivity rating (from 78.6% to 96.2%). This means that they can identify positive cases between 78.6% and 96.2% of the time. At their lowest level, they compare poorly to other tests while at their highest sensitivity, they outperform other tests.

For comparison, the Boson SARS-COV-2 Rapid Antigen Test correctly identifies people with COVID 98.04% of the time (sensitivity). It correctly identifies people who do not have COVID 93.75% of the time (specificity).

The Artron COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test correctly identifies people with COVID 91.30% of the time (sensitivity) and correctly identifies people who do not have COVID 99.56% of the time (specificity).

How long does it take to get results from The Canadian Shield?

The rapid tests that The Canadian Shield sells will typically show your test results in 15 minutes. This is the standard time that it takes for the majority of rapid antigen tests and is much faster than standard PCR tests, which can take up to 3 days to show test results.

Pros and cons of The Canadian Shield

Pros

  • Approved by Health Canada. All rapid tests are approved by Health Canada.
  • Competitive pricing. The Canadian Shield tests are $10 each, which is much less expensive than other providers (who sell BTNX tests for $12 to $20 each).
  • Free shipping available. There are no shipping fees for orders over $125.
  • Canada-wide shipping. You can order tests from anywhere in Canada even though the company is based in Ontario.
  • Quick cancellation. You can cancel your order and get a refund as long as your order hasn’t been processed or shipped (usually takes 1-3 business days). Cancel your order as soon as possible for the best results.

Cons

  • Only one test type. The Canadian Shield only offers BTNX tests and does not offer other types of rapid antigen tests.
  • Low sensitivity. Tests aren’t able to detect positive cases of COVID-19 in every case (and sensitivity can be as low as 78.6%).
  • Shipping fees for smaller orders. You’ll pay shipping fees for orders under $125 based on where you live, which can make your order more expensive.
  • Not ideal for travel. You won’t be able to use The Canadian Shield’s rapid antigen test for travel unless taken under the supervision of a medical professional.

Does The Canadian Shield sell anything other than COVID tests?

Yes. The Canadian Shield also sells medical-grade N95 face masks, disposable procedural masks and youth-sized cloth masks. N95 and surgical respirator masks come in boxes of 20-25 that range in price from $29.99 to $55.99 per box.

All the company’s procedural masks are made in Canada and come in boxes of 50. The price ranges from $18.49 to $55.95 per box. Sales are occasionally available.

The Canadian Shield also sells a range of Danby air purifiers and replacement filters. Every purifier is equipped with a HEPA filter, which captures 99.97% of dust, allergens, smoke and pollen from the air. Prices range from around $174.99 to over $400 per device, while replacement filters cost anywhere from $40 to $90 each.

Our verdict: Is The Canadian Shield any good?

The Canadian Shield offers affordable tests but they have a lower sensitivity rating than many other tests.

  • Cost. The Canadian Shield sells BTNX tests that are $2 to $10 cheaper per test than other providers.
  • Accuracy. Tests have a sensitivity range from 78.6% to 96.2%, which means they can identify this percentage of positive tests. On the lower end of the scale, the accuracy of these tests is much lower than many other rapid antigen tests.
  • Speed of results. Results show up in an average time frame compared to other tests.
  • Shipping. You’ll be required to pay for shipping and there is no longer curbside pick-up in Ontario.

The Canadian Shield offers very affordable tests but these tests are often on back order and they have a lower sensitivity rating than other rapid antigen tests in some cases.
